turbo 400 trans conversion
i'm thinking of putting in a turbo 400 trans and taking out the 4-speed in my c-20 , has anyone did a trans swap that they could tell me if they liked it or disliked it? i might be pulling a small utility trailer from time to time and also a small boat , any suggestions on the swap or keep the 4-speed in, thanks,

I have a TH400 in my '66 Suburban, with no complaints. The TH400 is a good heavy duty 3 speed auto trans. There are a couple variations of the TH400. There is a slightly lighter duty TH375, and a little heavier duty TH425. A couple things to keep in mind is that the 1st gear in the TH400 is slightly higher than in a TH350. Also the TH400 takes more power to turn it as compared to a TH350. So you should ask yourself if you really need a TH400, or will a TH350 be adequate.
As for whether to stay with a 4 speed or convert to a TH400, that is a personal preference IMO. Do you want to have to shift all the time, or just put it in drive and go?

Try a 700r4, it has a low ehough 1st gear for most applications, and you can use third gear when towing your boat......but when you are cruising down the freeway the od gear will really help your mileage.....your rpms will drop 27% at a given speed.
