Standard 3spd saginaw or something else??

Looks different that some pics I've seen of them (with the fins on the bottom and the shape of flange that bolts to bellhousing) and this is hooked up to a custom shifter on the floor thats why I wonder.

Re: Standard 3spd saginaw or something else??

Judging by the (3) shift rods/arms, I'd say it's either a 4 or 5 speed. But I've got no idea what it is. I can't think of any 4-speed pictures I've come across that look like that?

Also, is the lower RH bolt into the bellhousing just missing, or does the tranny hole not line up with the bellhousing hole? That may be a good clue as well... It appears it was mounted off the tailhousing in its previous application too, didn't even pull the mount before they put it in.

Good eye on the bolt being missing, I'll check that out some more. This is/was a 3 on the tree column shift 250 I6 truck. Also, there is a little sensor with wires running out on one side of the trans.

It's a 4 speed o/d that gm used. Based on the chrysler A833. You can tell by the severely bent shifter arms.

Re: Standard 3spd saginaw or something else??

Muncie and Borg Warner car 4spds have the reverse shift arm in the tail housing. Saginaw car 4 spd has the reverse shift arm in the side cover along with the 1-2, 3-4 arms. Chrysler A-833 4 spds have the reverse arm below the side cover.

Chrysler A-833 OD trans has the 1-2 shift arm pointing up in the normal fashion, but the 4-3 arm points down. I think that is the only way to identify the OD trans from the regular 4 speed A-833.

Chrysler started using that OD trans in their cars in the '70s and then in Dodge and Chevy trucks in the '80s.

If memory serves, Chevy used that trans with two different bellhousing patterns. Neither bell had provisions for side mounts. I think they used a bell with the dodge pattern and sometimes with the Chevy pattern. Below is a Chevy alum bell with Dodge pattern.

Your trans may be hanging on with two bolts.

Re: Standard 3spd saginaw or something else??

I have a 18 spline version of the A-833 in my '69 Roadrunner. The 18 spline is a conventional 4spd with 1:1 4th gear. The gears are nearly straight cut so it's louder than the truck SM465 in my '67. The 18 spline A-833 was Chryslers answer to the Muncie M22 Rock Crusher only bigger.

Re: Standard 3spd saginaw or something else??

Thanks, i knew there were guys here that could help! Glad I checked- now i won't scrap it. It sounds like a good alternative to the T5 to get OD. Any chance I could get a tailhousing for a 4x4 to fit this? Was this offered in 80's chevy 4x4 trucks?

I'm guessing the 2 bolts wasn't an issue with the little 250 I6.

Should be able to get a tailshaft/housing from a Dodge 4x4 to connect to a transfer case, maybe.
