making a 235 chevy 3769716 work in a 56 3100

I have a 56 chevy 3100 with a 235 in a stepside truck. My original 235 engine block #’s 0365139 F56X, 15 004, 3837004, GM14, CON4, E176 and head #’s 3836848, GM7, E106, CON 12, B43, 848, 850 was rusted and completely sludge over internally. I am now waiting to do a complete rebuild on it. Buying parts slowly.

I purchased a running 235 running motor.Block # 3769716 Head #3836848. It was in a 52 chevy 3100. He bought the truck a month ago and does not know the history only that it was not the original motor. I heard it run and pulled the valve cover. I inspected it and he told it has a possibly damaged lifter and/or flattened camshaft lobe on the #3 intake and a few slightly bent pushrods. It does run well and does not smoke. I have a 261 cam, solid lifters, and new pushrods that I purchased for the rebuild of my original motor. I am thinking an easy swap till i get mine original 235 rebuilt.

I was talked to Patrick from Patricks Antique Cars and Trucks (a great guy) a few months ago he advised me to stay away from the 3769716 block in my 56 Chevy 3100. I could not remember which number he said until I called him today AND after I bought this motor. He stated that because I have the 2 bird leg motor mounts on my 56 3100 that they eliminated the mounting screw holes on the 3769716 block that I needed in order to mount that motor in my truck. He stated it is very troublesome to mount this block in my truck.

My original block needs to be bored out to .040 and one cylinder sleeved, plus all new everything.

I have another spare block that is from a 55 235. I purchased it for a rebuild incase my original was not good. Engine Block # 0725059 F55Y, 3836233, GM2, C165, CON4 and Head #’s B20 887, 066, 570, 370188, GM7, H123, CON 13. This motor did not come with carb, water pump, alternator, intakes or exhaust manifold. It turns freely by hand motor oil and heads were very clean removed the push rod cover and everything was clean there also. He heard a "bang" noise and towed it back to his house and installed another motor in his truck.

Has anyone ran across this 3769716 block not fitting in a 56 3100?

Does anyone have a solution or know what do to to correct this problem?

Should I use the the parts off of the 3769716 block make the 55 block running and switch out the head on the 55 to the 848?

My objective is to get the truck running cheaply that is reliable until I can get the original rebuilt.

Thanks for the help new guy here trying to make old pieces work.

He is correct. 1960 and up blocks lack the proper mounting holes and do not have the casting material to drill the holes. Your going to have to find a block from 55.2 to 59 preferably 58 or 59 which were all drilled for hyd lifters.
