crossmember question?

I am sure this is been asked on here a bunch, but I am doing a 5 front,7 rear drop on my 69 C -10 and was wondering why the trailing arm crossmember needs to be moved forward a inch?

I'm no expert, but I would also say no. Did a 5" rear drop on a 67 and didn't move anything...Jim

I agree with the other guys but I wanna complicate the situation. I saw this thread earlier and have been thinking about arcs and suspension travel all day. If the truck is dropped with springs the wheel will move farther forward in the wheel opening as it is lowered. The last thing you'd wanna do is make it even worse by moving the crossmember further forward. I think you'd wanna move it back if anything. Some of the aftermarket crossmembers offer adjustability if you wanna go to those lengths so it does hold some merit. The first thing I'd do is knock out the rivets of the trailing arm brackets on the crossmember and flip them upside down to put the forward end of the trailing arm higher in the truck to correct the geometry. If you wanna be anal, mark the centerline of the rear wheel opening and adjust the rear suspension so that the rear wheels are centered. In short, you dont have to touch a thing (did I mention c notches?) to drop it that low in the rear but you can if you wanna take it a step further.

Call me crazy, but I think the rear wheel will move backwards when the rear is lowered with springs. As the rear end moves up through the arc it will move farther away from the front wheel. Now, when the axle is above the frame rail (like with a step notch) then the wheel base would shorten slightly.

I have never seen anyone move it just a lot that replaced it with some kinda aftermarket one tho.
