New Guy in Tucson

Hey All, New to the board. I have a '78 GMC 2wd long bed with a 454. Love the truck and it is in fantastic shape. Been in the family since 1980. Looking to make some modifications. I want to level it and lift it enough to clear 33's (get a little ground clearance for the areas I hunt and play in. I want to install a part time locker in the rear, should help me keep from getting stuck. Want to milk 14-17 MPG out of the 454, sitting at 10 now. Redo the interior with buckets and a console.

Liking what I see so far, hope to learn alot

Eric

A 4 inch lift will clear 33's. I barely clear my 33's with a 2 inch lift. And good luck with getting 14 mpg with a big block, I don't even expect that much with my 2001 5.3-liter swap

Planning HEI, FI and an overdrive to get 14 MPG. I am thinking it will be enough. Any reccomendations on lift brand?

Re: New Guy in Tucson

14mpg is obtainable from a 454. Ive done it with a 1984 crewcab 1t SRW truck. It was a 454/th400,14bolt 3.73 gears @ 60mph...carbed engine...no OD and NO EFI. Make sure you've got a GOOD tune, air pressure in tires are on the higher side of rating. (ie, if tire max press is 80psi, set it at 60 instead of 40= less rolling resistance) and ease into the gas leaving a stop....you dont have a race car.

Re: New Guy in Tucson

My best highway with a C20 454 SM45 granny 4 speed with GearVendor overdrive was 13 mpg. That is all stock with Qjet carb, 4:10 rear axle. City bwst was 11 mpg.

Re: New Guy in Tucson

You can run 285x75x16 on a late model wheel and they will clear just fine.
