Replacement gas tank

Any suggestions? I do need it quickly.


I bought a tank from from Classic Parts because it said it was a Blazer/Suburban tank. The ad said the spout may need modifications but I thought that they we meaning if you install it in a truck. My shop says it would need $500 in mods to make it work. I called Classic parts this morning and they we very nice and will allow me to return the item even though it was purchased in March.

What kind of modifications did the shop say it needed for $500? That seems pretty steep, unless they are talking about cutting the spout, moving it/realigning it, then welding it back up and pressure/leak testing it. That'd be the only way I could see it costing so much.

I am sure the shop price is exaggerated but the point is that it is not cost effective.

I don't know of any new tank that won't need the fill neck modified. The replacement tanks have a short nipple that comes straight out of the tank at a 45 degree angle upwards aimed at a frame mount for a body mount, meaning you can't attach a hose as it will be kinked close. The original fill neck goes forward up and around the obstruction. Take the fill neck(cut it off as close as you can, but fill the old empty tank with water) off your old tank and either have it brazed to the new tank nipple ( you might have to shorten the nipple a little), or use a 2 1/2 - 3 " piece of fuel fill hose and 4 stainless clamps to double clamp splice the nipple to the old fill tube.

This is for the burb. I am looking for a direct replacement.

I got my replacement OE style metal tank from LMC years ago, and it went right in with no modifications.

However the new tank fuel spout is shorter and has no upward bend like the originals, but that didn't pose a problem for me since I just used a little longer fill tube rubber hose (couple inches).

Come on guys anyone know of a direct fit. The one I got from Classic Parts the straps won't even fit.

There is nothing hard about this.
Pick any one of the vendors, and buy the metal OE tank.
They all fit right where the original tank was.

What was wrong with the straps?

Unless you can tell me one that does'nt need to be modified it is very difficult. I am not doing this my self and the cost to have it modified on top of the cost of thak is not in the budget. I also don't want to be stuck with shipping charges to return another tank. I need to get it right the first time and no one has said they have found a direct replacement.

Probably what is happening is the guy receiving the tank and putting it in is confused with the straps being sent.

All of the vendors I have seen and talked to, ship the straps in a way that makes them look as though they are wrong.

The straps need to be bent into shape to work, due to the way the packaging works.

Bending them to fit takes no extra effort what so ever, one just uses their hands to bend them into shape.
The new straps also use 4 J bolts, where as the originals used 2 J bolts and 2 integrated J bolts.

No new holes need to be drilled into the frame.

There are more problems than just the straps. I trust the guy at the shop as he works on plenty of these trucks including n2billet's rides.

Well, with out pictures showing what you are working with it is pretty hard to understand what the problem is isn't it.

These tanks are direct replacement, and require little to none modification to replace an original tank of the same size.

How many 67-72 Suburbans has this shop done anyways?
If they are giving you this much hassle over a fuel tank, I can't even imagine what else they are going to have trouble with.

I have determined it is a Counterpart tank part #69-9310BK1T. Anyone know if you have used this tank?
