NV4500 swap question....
So, I know this isn't unfamiliar territory with a lot of you guys around here so I thought I would ask some questions.
I want to end up with a 5spd tranny in my truck eventually and just want to know the easiest way to do this. Through the poking around I have done I have found that an NV4500 can be swapped in place of sm465 and only be about a 1/2" longer. Anyway I have an original 69 350, sm465, and np205 t-case that I will be using in my truck, so what if any modifications need to be made to make the NV4500 work, and is it a solid transmission? I really have very little experience with it. It will be going on a 71 4x4 frame if that matters at all. I would also be open to purchasing a trans that has the same specs as far as dimensions go as a sm465 but from a custom driveline place or such that could provide the overdrive gear, if that makes sense. Thanks a lot, Jr |

Here is a link to look over .http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=551857
Many different ways to get this done and all depends on parts or amount of cash your wanting to spend. Do it right the 1st time and never look back with wore out used parts only to save time on the front side. Buying used cores from $700 up it's not worth doing.

Re: NV4500 swap question....
The NV 4500 is the heavy duty 5 speed overdrive trans and it is a tuff son of a gun. It is used in the 3/4 ton 1ton and even in medium duty 4500 and 5500 I think[on the last two I'm not positive] Dodge uses it as well in their truck behind their gas and diesel engines both same as the General. The General has used the NV4500 as far back as91-2ish range. So it has been put in hundreds of thousands of trucks. I am sure you will find haters out there but you will find haters on any product that more than two were produced.

Re: NV4500 swap question....
Thanks for the input. I would be completely rebuilding the trans, motor and t-case before they go in, so that's why I'm trying to get a handle on what parts I need now. Thanks again and ill read over that other thread entirely when I get a chance, it should clear up some questions.
Thanks again, Jr Posted via Mobile Device |
