SPID help "S" St. Louis plant
Having problems nailing down some information and need some help.
Many plants stopped using the RPO suffix codes on the later production trucks. However some plants continued to use them. Now I know that St.Louis switched to numbers from letters between '71 and '72. What I am trying to nail down is did this happen during the summer of 1971 MY change over, was it earlier or even later? Does anyone have a known original '71 "S" SPID with number suffixes? Does anyone have a known original '72 "S" SPID with letter suffixes? Also I have a format question as well. So anyone who has an early '72 SPID from "S" St.Louis they will share, I would really like to see it. Ranges from 100001-110001 are best. Tim, I have a few, 1S or 2S, SPIDS in my collection. They all have long code. The sequence numbers are 1,5,6,8, as GMC's were built there and they had two assy. lines. I can only send one or two in my email cause of settings I won't change. So I guess call me or I can send you a disk snail mail.

I will check mine when I get home late tonight. Most of mine are Fremont SPIDS, but I had Chipflyer duplicate my 72 Cheyenne SPID (before I sold the truck), and it was a St. Louis truck.

Tim I don't have any 71 labels in my collection with numbers (suffix) but I do have some 72 labels that you are looking for.
I have never had much luck trying to nail down specifics about plants or years when dealing with the labels. They certainly are interesting. I like to tell people you can never say "they always" or "they never" when discussing SPIDS. Always good info and a fun topic! Jeff

Thanks for the replies so far. Bruceman1968 & Chipflyer the provided SPIDs really helped to confirm just how inconsistant the early '72 SPIDs from St.Louis were. More are welcome of course from anyone.

In looking at my book, the one used by dealerships to order new trucks, those prefixes and suffixes are not used. For instance, G60; U63, etc. It seems I read on here once that those other letters/numbers may have been applicable to a shift, or a line or ???
If it mattered, we might see a Z71 on the side of a 4WD that read, "1Z71AA".

I spent a lot of time years ago trying to come up with original factory or dealer documentation that described what the suffix letters or numbers meant and never did come up with anything. I am sure it meant something but I fear it may be lost info, that's why I like to hoard all the label pics I can find, best documentation there is.

Tim,
Being in MO and close to StL most of the trucks I have had came from the StL plant (Which by the way was closed down in 83 when Corvettes moved to Bowling Green KY. Prior to 83 GM had a car line, truck line and built Corvettes at the Union Ave. plant in StL). I have a stack of spid's I collected through the years at junk yards and a healthy inventory of 72's and a 71 truck at the house produced in June of 71. I will take a look and see what I have for ya. Ozark Tim I'd really appreciate you taking a look. More confirming data can only help. It seems like they were really messed up on the early SPID format for the '72MY. Suspecting it was intergrating a new year and new codes that kind of skewed everything.

Here is something of a story for you about the St. Louis plant. I knew an older man years back. He was one of the line foreman on the truck line back in the 60's until the plant closed in 83. He told me that before the front clips went on the trucks a worker was supposed to insert a wand in the front hole on the rocker, squeeze a trigger and coat the inside on the rocker drawing the wand out and then place the plastic plug on it. He also said plenty of em went down the line and didnt get the coating b/c the worker would be having a smoke break. NOW WE KNOW!!!! LOL!!! |

I looked at the spid's last night. I have 2 72's from St.L One is CCE242S17 and the other is CCE142S12 and both use nubers after the RPO code. I was surprised the rest of them I have are different plants as are the trucks I have with the exception of my C-30 which is CCE332S17 and it also has numbers after the RPO #. Hope this helps. |
