Re: Charge problem

I see you've gotten a lot of views but no replies; probably because you've presented a pretty good mystery.

I'd start where I normally do with charging problems - how are your battery terminals and cables?

Is there corrosion on the battery? Junk on the battery can be conductive, and if it gets wet when it rains, that might lead to grounding. It's a long shot, but I'd take a look.

I'd also take a look and see what things look like around the starter solenoid. The battery cable to the solenoid is always hot, so if there's some leaking voltage around there, that's another possibility.

Good luck.

Re: Charge problem

Its a brand new red top and the cables are fine I just replaced both of them. I cleaned my starter a while back when I put in my headers. I'm thinking like you said the water is creating a ground somewhere so I will be fine combing it this weekend. I have the wife thinking its the HEI distributor so I might end up with a MSD out of the deal lol. If worse comes to worse I may have to rewire the whole charging system

Re: Charge problem

if you know its going to rain disconect your battery. are you dirving in the rain? where is the wetness coming from/going that is causing the ground? replace your hood to cowl seal.

and if the rain/water is cuasing that big of a drain that your battery is dead, thats alot of draw.. smoke? signs of arching?

Re: Charge problem

Nothing that I have found, yet. The water is leaking in at the rear of my hood the springs are bent so there is a 5/8" gap right above the Distributor. No driving during the rain.
