Not what you expect to see at Mecum

Went to the Mecum Auction in Kansas City tonight and saw this with a SOLD sticker on the windshield. I talked with the guy that bought it for $2,500. Said he owns a farm somewhere in Illinois and was going to use it at the farm.
The old truck was solid. Little or no rust and the doors opened and closed better than when it was new.

Looked at your album, had some nice trucks but just dont like the newer step side beds on our trucks. And did the same person paint a few of those they all have the same two-tone paint job stylye starting on top of the hood.

Hey Bill -

Wow - nice 4X4 truck for the money - that one must have been a late entry as I was not able to see it on the Mecum site.

In your opinion - what were the overall quality levels of the 68 thru 72 trucks being auctioned? We've been watching the event here in Texas and noticed a few which got into the low 20's that did not sell and several more which sold under 13K. They all look good on the TV and on Mecum's site but you know as well as I do you've got to see them in person.

I saw that truck sell, I was shocked to see that there too lol. I looked it over, it was very clean

Hey Wayne,

With the exception of the farm truck (it sold early on Friday, but no pic on the website), most of the trucks in were done well. There was a mint green and white 68 in the album that was particularly well done.

Having said that, last night was strange night. I'm no expert on vehicle value, but it seemed half the cars that rolled over the block didn't sell, despite what I thought were pretty good bids. There was a 64 Plymouth that bid up to $21.5K but the seller wanted $23K and they spent five minutes talking him into accepting $22K There was an ochre and white 71 longbed that I would compare to the truck you bought condition-wise that bid up to about $18K but didn't sell. They announced it was going to take $24K. Then, a few minutes later, a K20 that supposedly had a frame-off, but I didn't care much for, sold for about $18K.

I was talking to the guy that owned the mint green and white 68. Said he'd bought a new airplane that afternoon so was needing to get rid of the truck. The bid on that truck got to $18K. It looked like they were trying to make a deal after the bid closed, but the owner walked off shaking his head.

I watch these car actions and am always surprized by what they go for. Recently watched a 50 chevy pk up restored go for $35,000 on chasing classics. then some like the newer one's 63-72 got for a whole lot less. Go figure, It's all in how bad someone wants these trucks.

They had an orange and white 70 Cheyenne with 72 door panels. You don't see those every day.

Thanks for the update Bill – glad to hear they were mostly good quality trucks. I agree with you about the amount of no sales and the amount of “bargains”, very strange. My only guess is - the buyers and sellers have concerns with the future economy. We saw a super clean 1972 Nova go for less than 14K. Glad I wasn’t there – lol.

Yes sir - I saw that too. The announcers kept stating 1970 – the grille was obviously a 71 or 72 and the door panels were definitely 72, and the rearview mirror was on the glass. That truck looked super clean but the bidding stopped at $10500 which really surprised me.

Even the Mecum website states it as a 1970 -

I didn't see that truck last night. Owner must have got mad and taken it home. I ran into a few guys doing that.
Wish I had though. Other than the white letter tires I really like that look.

If only Wyatt and I go then we will bring his truck Nancy. If Dee joins us then we will bring the family truckster (Expedition). The auction is going to be next April 26th & 27th. Think you can you can join us?

BTW – did you get a chance to look at this 72 GMC 4x4? It is supposed to go on the block later tonight. Photos look good.

I was wondering if you were going to try to sell the blue truck in April. Or have you changed your mind about selling? I certainly plan to go to the April auction.

I saw the GMC and it looked pretty good. No issues. But it didn't make much of an impression on me as I didn't take any photos.

Oh – sorry I misunderstood. Since we missed the deadline for the past Dallas auction we’ve decided to do a few little things to the truck and enjoy her for a while. We will see how things are going and maybe take her to Dallas next year.

So that GMC didn’t float your boat? I’m a sucker for an old 4x4.

I have been watching a good portion of the auction over the past few days. It seems like there were a lot of bargains in cars and an awful lot of cars that didn't sell. Probably due to general unease about the fiscal cliff 24/7 coverage?
