Pinion bolt

I have a 67 chevy c10 lwb with original rear end. Do not know gear ratio. But anyways I notice a leak from the pinion area. So I removed the driveshaft and am tryin to get the Pinion Bolt off but it won't budge. I am using a 1 1/8 socket with the airgun and nothing is turning. PUt alot of wd40 since Weds. I am trying to replace the Crush sleeve. I believe that is causing the leak. Any help and all is welcome. Its kickin my butt.

Most home compressors and impact guns don't have enough power to get that nut off. You'll need to get the wheels on it and on the ground, block them good, use a breaker bar (a piece of pipe on the breaker bar or ratchet) at least 1/2 drive. The crush sleeve will not cause it to leak. I'd just replace the seal, clean up the area real good, apply a little silicon sealer to the metal lip. Make sure you lube up the rubber seal to.

Personally, I would use a new nut when i go back together. Be sure and not overtighten going back together, it is easy to do and you'll wear the bearing out. It really just has to be snug. Something like 15 inch ilbs of pressure to turn pinion and that ain't much. Tighten like a wheel bearing if that helps.

Yup, 15 inches of rotating tork....new bearings, maybe a tick more. But right on line with what the 1st good man had to say crazyL

You can't do rotating torque spec with the diff all assembled. Mark the nut to the pinion and yolk with a center punch. Using a breakerbar remove nut if your impact wont do it. Tap yolk off and replace seal. You might need a speedy sleeve if there are some serious grooves in the yolk. Reassemble with marks lining up and reinstall nut. Tighten till all marks line up then go a little past to get pressure on the crush sleeve again.

You can do rotating torque if you are careful. Back the pinion up to where it isn't engaged to the ring gear (you can feel it) It will only move forward maybe a 1/2 inch before it contacts the ring gear again but enough to measure the torque it took to move it without trying to move ring gear too.

be sure and put in new rear end grease when you are done, it needs to be replaced every now and then.
