Should I use a larger washer in steering wheel?

I don't think I had a washer when I converted my steering to automatic. I have the bad manual (without index) and have found various pictures of steering assembly and some have a large washer after the spring and some don't. Should I put one on or not?

The spring is missing in the picture (I just painting it). Any thoughts?

Cheers,
