ChiefRocka Split Break Question

Chief,

I have a date or three with Ol John Lee (64 C10 SBSS) over the Christmas Holiday.

On tap is:

1. Full front suspension rebuild.

2. Dual Drum/Drum Manual brake conversion

3. Intake manifold gasket/oil leaks

One question. On your Dual Break Master Cylinder conversion thread, you plugged one outlet on the passenger side front tee fitting.

Was the plug you used a special plug with inverted fitting shape to the face or a simple brass pipe plug?

Re: ChiefRocka Split Break Question

I used an inverted flare plug, easily available as SB70 mentioned.

An 1/8 pipe plug might work as well ....

Re: ChiefRocka Split Break Question

Thanks. I'll see if NAPA has the inverted flare plugs. Regular parts houses don't seem to either have them or know what they are....

Re: ChiefRocka Split Break Question

I gotta recheck my lines. I know I have 1/4 up front for the front cylinders and there is 3/16 from either side of the rear T to the rear cylinders.

If the center line from the passenger front t to the passenger side rear t is also 1/4 line, I think I'll just eliminate the passenger front t all together - dispensing with the plug and all the extra places for leaks to start at that corner.

Re: ChiefRocka Split Break Question

I did this a few weeks ago on my 63, and NAPA had the correct flare type plug in stock.

Re: ChiefRocka Split Break Question

Cool. I checked the thread sizes on the front and rear flexible hoses. It confirms the front lines are 7/16x24 to connect up to the original 1/4" front hard lines.

The rear hose is 3/8x24 which means both rear hard lines to the wheel cylinders are 3/16" size as well as the line between the right front Tee and the rear hose.

So, I suspect I'll simply eliminate the entire right front tee and run 1/4" line all the way to the back. I can simply reduce at that fitting to hook up to the smaller rear brake hose fittings. It'll give me fewer joints over all and a bit more flexibility in running the lines to the rear.

Re: ChiefRocka Split Break Question

Now I just gotta crawl under to measure all the lengths and get a count on fittings, clamps, etc. And root around in the tool box for the disk that goes on my tubeing bender sized for 1/4 and 3/16 lines. That rooting around could be the longest part of this job!

Chief, I tried a 1/8 pipe plug on my '66--it tried to start for a couple of threads but wouldn't "fit"--but I did not force it in an attempt to "make" it work anyway! Had to use a hard-to-find (at Advance A/p) plug that did fit. We happened upon ONE on their shelf, out of any package, with no way to determine its part#, that fit perfectly. Substantially diff. from 1/8 pipe plug.
