Doors, dash, and custom headliner.
Hey guys!
First post on here. But, I've been reading the forums for quite some time. I've got an 83 C10 LWB that I picked up about 3 months ago for $400. Wasn't too excited about the interior, so I started going at it. So far I'm about halfway done with my headliner. The doors and dash will all get wrapped in similar fabric. Here's my progress so far. Here's what I started with. Nasty and old. Started by stripping the old headliner and glue off. Then laid down a coat of fiberglass resin to stiffen the foam a little bit before I moved on. Here it is after some resin.(Sorry for the horrible picture) After going rounds in my head, I decided to keep the stock stereo in the dash for the looks. So, I got a universal under dash setup and decided to put it into the headliner. Once I got that on there, decided to add some speakers to it as well. Once I got my layout all right. I broke out the hot glue gun and some fleece. This is where I'm at now. Another view. You can kind of see where the radio will mount. I'll probably get to the fiberglass part of it this weekend. I'll post more updates once I get to that point. Here's what the fabric looks like. Let me know what you guys think!! Steven

Re: Doors, dash, and custom headliner.
Are you going to brush resin over the fleece or just cover it with your headliner material?

Re: Doors, dash, and custom headliner.
Groovy. I have my dash apart for the 50th time while I am waiting for a new vacuum actuator for the defroster. I am tired of fooling around with the crappy dash fitment and cracks in these old squares, so I think I am going to get a presentable used instrument bezel and try to install some real wood on the top of the dash, then install about 1/2" foam on the face of the dash covered with some heavy backed vinyl in a color to match the rest of the interior.

- Tucson I'll be recovering my dash here soon too. I've got it out and ready. About 5 big cracks to deal with before I recover though. I'll post progress when I start on that one.

I like the idea of speakers in/on the headliner! Was thinkin about buyin one of those "Highliner" (?) headliner with the speakers built in for my 82.Keep us posted on your project, may have to try it myself. [/quote] I thought about getting one of those myself. But, the quality didn't really seem up to par to me or worth the cost. Plus, I like doing something different than most. That said, I got a little done this morning. Got some resin and glass on the speaker pods. Was going to do the stereo also, but ran out of resin. Once I get another gallon, I'll get the rest done. Need to order my headliner material monday also. Here's a couple pictures. Not much, but gives the general idea. Don't mind the edges of the fleece. It's not glued down on the backside yet. ;D More to come soon! Steven

Caution. The resin will get HOT when it's drying.

Re: Doors, dash, and custom headliner.
So, I finally got a little more work done today. Almost finished with the headliner. It needs some filler and some fine tuning. Pictures of that to come soon. Got my dash started. Thought I had taken pictures, but I can't seem to fine them. Had about 5 pretty big cracks though. Filled in the cracks with expanding foam. Cut it down with a razor, then sanded the whole thing. (Sorry no pictures of after the foam). Wrapped the whole thing in my pretty red fleece. That's where I'm at now. Just gotta wait for it to cure. Here's a couple shots of it.
As soon as it dries, I'll get some filler on it to make it smooth and shaped just how I want it. Then I'll get to covering it. It's going to be tough with what I've chosen to use, but should be fun. Also, started with my door panels. After putting together what I'd done...I didn't like it. AND, I forgot I've got manual windows.... and didn't make provisions for a window crank. Oops! So, off to find some regulators and motors, and some fancy switches. More on that soon. Let me know what you guys think!

Re: Doors, dash, and custom headliner.
You are very right! Went a little heavy on the hardener on my first batch of resin. It gelled on me, so I mixed a new bunch up. After about 20 minutes, the first one was almost melting the plastic container that it was in. Nice and warm to hold though. Kind of nice in the cold weather here.

Re: Doors, dash, and custom headliner.
Hey, sorry for no updates lately. Things have been crazy at work so I haven't had much time. The headliner is going into the body shop soon to get it all smoothed out before it gets wrapped. Might take the dash in too. So lucky to work at a GM dealership where there's an award winning body shop. I'll get some pictures up soon. I've mainly focused on getting the 305 running right since it just became my daily driver. Thanks for the support guys!
