rear bumper question...

Hi Guys,

Every time I come on here, I am amazed at how much info is on here...I learn something new every time!

This might be a dumb question, I'm not sure. After looking through a lot of pics of '67-72's, I can't remember seeing another one with a rear bumper like the one on my truck...here is a pic.

Is this a GM bumper? Or did someone swap it out? I actually kinda like it, because it isn't as big as some of the step bumpers.

Thanks for the help! I'm just kinda curious as to what it is and if it is correct for the truck.

Re: rear bumper question...

I prefer the sports bumpers but I havent found one that I could paint. This is a heavy duty bumper I had on my truck but Junked the bumper a year ago. Now I have no bumper and regret junking it because I do not have a place to put my license plate. I could definatley live with a bumper like the ONE you have on your truck.

Hey 50bomb,

Yeah, I was kinda planning on putting a roll pan on it, but I kinda like this bumper...it isn't as big as a lot of the step bumpers.

Re: rear bumper question...

That's not a factory bumper. It's aftermarket or dealer-installed. They weren't too rare way back when, but you don't see a lot of them anymore.

Re: rear bumper question...

Thanks truckster! That answers my question...I didn't think it was a GM bumper. I haven't seen any other ones like it.

Re: rear bumper question...

From the angles of the ends and general simplicity of it I would say it was homemade. Not that is a bad thing just saying it is probably fairly unique. A picture or two of the bottom side and brackets would probably confirm this.

If I were keeping this on a truck a little flattening on the ends, say an inch would keep it from hurting so much when you run into it.

Also when you need something identified a picture of the part in question is more helpful than the truck as a whole.

The stripes are they the factory D89 stripes? They would be on the SPID label if original.

Check out my bumper restoration thread. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=551823

For less than about 20 bucks, you can get that thing looking like new

Hey Mister-B, Thanks for the advice. Did you prep your bumper (sandbalst, wire brush, etc?) before your primered it?

I really didn't do much. I believe I used a wire brush quickly, and then wiped it clean with a rag. That primer is good stuff. It soaked in really well and sealed it up

May as well. You're looking at around several hundred bucks for a non sport replacement, when you figure in tax and shipping

Re: rear bumper question...

Bumper looks after market - see similar on farm trucks. I have a similar one I took off of my '56 except it wraps around the back fenders a little. They are heavier than stock.

Re: rear bumper question...

They are aftermarket or dealer bumpers. Most dealers offered them as a courtesy to their new truck buyers back in the day. The price you had to pay for having the "free" bumper was the dealers name and town engraved and hilighted in another color in the bumper. I have some of these bumpers from the dealers from the towns around me . One of my 70's [the swb] has one. I also have two or three more on the ground at the shop. Years ago they were just scrap iron, now they are starting to become increasingly collectble. Jim

Re: rear bumper question...

I have one that looks a lot like that on my 69 that I just started resto on. It's welded to the frame, so it's going to be a pain to get off. Probably a common aftermarket piece for the day. It's a very thick steel bumper.

Re: rear bumper question...

Thanks Guys!

The more I look around, the more I think I'm going to stick with it. It is very well built and fits very nicely..but it is not welded on...that would suck!

I'm gld to hear that there is some interest in the older aftermarket stuff. I kinda want to keep it looking like an older, well-seasoned truck!
