duramax in a '69?
How hard would this be? I found a rolled durax in the area for $3500 complete, minus transfer case, and I am wondering if someone that knows a little about vehicles and can weld could put one in our year of truck, or if it would even fit.

Re: duramax in a '69?
I don't see why not. Just measure twice...
Definitely document the whole conversion. I had a 1970 with a Cummins 6bt in it. 1200lbs of diesel power. You can do it Posted via Mobile Device

Re: duramax in a '69?
Those motors are still bringing that kind of money. What trans does it have? If if were the allison they too bring good money still. There will be other parts no matter how hard hit the truck is. I don't see how you could go wrong ,even if you had to part it out you can make some money on it. I would do some research on the wiring that will be the most difficult thing of all in the project and prbably the most expensive after you have the engine purchased.

Re: duramax in a '69?
It does have an allison, which I would hang onto unless some one wanted to trade an nv4500for it, and Im sure a lot of the interior is still salvageable.

Re: duramax in a '69?
I used to subscribe to diesel world, and every other month someone would make the cover by having put a oil burner in an old truck. the most popular way to go about it was to put the old body on the new frame. The most labor intensive would be to make the diesel fit.
In a 69, the body is to small to fit properly on a new frame. Or at least thats how it looks sitting next to my cummins. my 69 swb stepside is only slightly bigger than my wifes accord.

I have looked into sticking a cummins in a ford a fair bit and have deduced that a motor swap is easiest. |

Re: duramax in a '69?
And yeah, i was thinking more along the lines of same frame, swap engines. Does anybody know the weight difference between a sbc and a duramax?

Re: duramax in a '69?
I dont think its gonna work out. He said he sold the starter, so I can't here it run, bit its a perfectly good engine. And the parents definitely werent too impressed with another pos either. I did find weights, though, if anyone is interested. A duramax weighs around 850lbs, but a 350 weighs around 575, and a 454 weighs around 650. So only 200lbs more than a stock option in these trucks. Thats impressive considering a cummins weighs around 1200lbs.

Re: duramax in a '69?
I had a similar situation when I was going to buy a vortec 350 still in a wrecked truck. Seller said it ran but he had sold the starter. I told him I would buy a starter and install it. If it ran and had good compression numbers like he said I would give asking price. If not he woul pay for starter. He never called me back. Huh. Go figure.

Re: duramax in a '69?
Duramax is a completely electronic engine, so you better make sure you get the whole harness, pedal, transmission and all if you are even considering such a swap. It uses a very high pressure fuel rail so that it can atomize the fuel to the point that it doesn't need a prechamber. It's a very different beast than the 6.2 and 6.5 engines that are more traditional Diesels. It's drive by wire and there is no other option in such a design and the harness is tied into just about everything. A lot of the Duramax swaps I've seen end up swapping in the dash as well. Impressive engine but not so easy to retrofit.
