a silly question...about pcv valves
Hey Guys,
I have a silly question. I've been looking around for a few cool things that I could do to my truck to dress her up a little, but keep it looking kinda retro. So, I've been lookig at sets of either 'Corvette' script or 'Chevrolet' script valve covers for her (since I need to do the gaskets anyway). But, they don't have a whole for the PCV valve. So, the question is obvious...how to you vent your crankcase with these? Is there a breather on the intake? It's been a long time since I've messed with small blocks...sorry for the silly question. If you are running a stock intake on a stock engine there MAY be a breather (aka "blow by") at the back of the block next to the distributor and also if it is a stock manifold there will be an oil fill tube sticking out of the front of the intake which has a breather cap.
If you have an aftermarket intake or later engine you will have to vent it some where. Many people drill a hole in the back of the valve covers and put breathers in there out of sight but then you have the issue of where do you put the oil in at???

Those old covers were run on engine with a draft tube out the back of the block, and an oil fill in the front of the intake manifold. So you'll have to get creative to make a proper PCV system. Plus like mentioned above, you'll need an intake with the oil fill tube in the front.

I just have the fill tube with a breather on my boat. I'm halfway looking ingo hiding a pcv system under the intake. I'm tired of having oil all over everything! Posted via Mobile Device

If you need an intake with an oil filler tube, shoot me a note. i have one I'm not using.

Are you looking for a PCV whole or hole?
The first question that should be ask is if you have '55 -'59 heads. Those valve covers have staggered bolt holes and will not fit later heads.

The system you set up should be able to draw gasses from the crank case to the bottom of the carb or the intake. You should have a breather on the oil fill tube. The Vette 327's had a hole in the block on the driver's side rear near the distributor and a vent tap that looked like this and was bolted to the block. The cylinder was a oil baffle for the system and was in the lifter gallery.
The PCV valve would either be in line or the type that actually screwed into the bottom of the carb. This is a photo of the 65 365hp Vette 327 that I put in the 66 C10 I had. Note the breather cap on the fill tube. If your block doesn't have provisions for the tap and the fill tube it is pretty hard to vent the crankcase properly with those valve covers.
