Column shifter hard to shift

I have an original column shifter in my 70 3/4 ton. In the morning it's
very hard to shift out of park into a gear. When the truck warms up it's alot more manageable, but by no means easy..
Whats the cause and fix?
Thank you in advance

Have someone pull the lever (as if to shift) and verify if it is disengaging at the end of your steering column. My guess is you need to rebuild your column.

Re: Column shifter hard to shift

I shot a liberal amount of wd-40 on the lower column and it freed it up. Some have used in upper end also, I would try the lower end first so you don't have stuff dripping out on you.

Re: Column shifter hard to shift

There's a plastic piece that wears out inside the column, and it will limit travel when you pull the lever back.
Wes at Classic Heartbeat sells all the parts you need, but requires a rebuild on the column.

I had a similar issue. There were two things I did at the same time, so I don't know which fixed it, but it works great now. Installed some Lucas tranny fix, and lubed the steering column with WD 40
