new guy with an 86 crew cab dually with a cummins

Jsut as it says. I have been lurking here for a long time. Looking at pics and seein the BS. Thought I might as well post up since mine is finally starting to look like somthing. here goes.

Bought this beat up CC dually for $1500. A/C, power windows, hydroboost, 454 dual exhasut power locks. But it had a blown trans. Got one from craigslist for $150. Turbo 400. Got it running and driving and swapped out the front captian's swivel seats for a bench. (I have 6 kids. The buckets just weren't going to cut it.)

Drove it like that for a long time. Started to get fed up with the crappy carpet covered door panels and all the " cowboy limo " **** it had all over it so I started removing interior panels and replacing them with plastic ones painting them black as we installed them.

Fast forward a few months of just driving it. Got my taxes in. Then all hell broke loose. The radiator blew, front tires were going bald, front brakes went and the front suspension was in bad shape ball joints shot, bushings wiped out, sloppy steering... you get the idea. So I ordered up a new rad and installed 2 electric fans on it. So now she gets 1100 cfm of push across it when needed. With the then 454 she had, she ran hot as hell all of the time. 200-215. This always had me pissed. I had bought the truck to use as a shop truck. Hauling cars back and forth for my hot rod shop I run. Turns out, she had a hell of a vaccum leak I found one day while washing the motor to cool it down. Further investigation revealed an intake gasket leak. Bad one too. Already frustrated with the ****ty gas mileage, I decide that maybe an intake upgrade would help out. So I upgraded the intake to an edelbrok 4 barrel with an edelbrock 4 barrel carb, and then turned my attention to the ignition system using all MSD products there. Coil included. Then I found out after getting it running again, that the intake leak had actually cracked an intake valve as the leak down test revealed. At that point I decided to hold off on it since I had to keep it on the road for the time being. Next up was the brakes and ****. I was already in there so I ordered up a set of BellTech 3 inch drop spindles for the front and a shackle and perch kit for the rear. Replaced all the brakes up front with new calipers, pads, rotors and bearings. Even hoses. Then set up the rear. Got it all dropped down. Was much happier with it then! Changed to white face guages with blacklight backing for the glow and struipped off the heavily cracked and falling apart dash pad.

Re: new guy with an 86 crew cab dually with a cummins

Then one night on the way back from a dinner with the family, the lights began to flicker. And of course, johnny law was on my tail. He pulled me over. but instead of a ticket, he offered to follow me home if I left the hazzards on. Lucky that time. Once iGot it home I found a mess of wiring that I had been avoinding honestly, that had actually balled up and melted. Now it wasn't bare before, or I would have dealt with it then. Can't risk my faimly. Then I ripped all of the wiring out and replaced it ALL. I love wiring, but this set me back a few days on my buisness and with all that had happened so far, I was losing more time than I could make up with all the buisness i had in my shop to be done. While I was there I added some running lights to the front, LED's, and changed those ugly as hell huge turn signals out for something more appealing.

within a few more months I had torn off the ****ty running boards and a few other things that were useless to make it look a bit cleaner.

Then **** got fun. I had ben looking into the cummins swap for some time. But the cost of what I needed was out of my range completely. I got lucky. I had a friend that had purchased a 94 dodge dually with a 12v and a gertrag. He had started placing it under his 47 ford truck. Then his health got in the way. HE couldn't do it himself any more so he GAVE me the project! A damn 12v with a 5 speed FOR FREE! I was super excited. it took a few weeks of planning and research since I was new to the diesel world, but we got her in there!

I had to change the floor out since she was an auto floor and I needed the clearance for the new large taller trans. But that was the only snag. I used a set of aftermarket Hot Rod motor mounts I had laying around and drileed a slotted hole in the original motor mount plates where the 454 went. I also took and mated the dodge abd chevy trans x members together to make one good operable unit to mount it with. Changed one U joint, and started driving it! I was given the entire dodge frame and parts that were on it, so I robbed the exhaust from it and mated it to the truck. I hate mufflers, and since I had to extend the exhaust to make it fit already since it came from a SWB truck, I just replaced the section with straight pipe. The exhaust looked like It came from the factory. Went right around the spare tire and everything. Super clean looking install.

I was not cool enough to have the camera in the shop for all of this though. Was in a huge hurry. Pulled the front clip and had most of the swap done in a weekend. Had to reroute fuel lines, empty the tank out, find adaptors to use the stock guages and sending units on the cummins and had to make a braket to use the chevy 110 alt on the cummins too. I just used the cummins alternator grooved pulley and it fit right up. handled the Killer Dowel Pin as well. It was already working it self out. The stock speedo cable fit right to the Gertrag even. So all my factory guages work with the cummins.

Since this was done I drove across the state, across 5 mtn passes, and picked up a car. Drove it back over the same 5 passes. Averaged 20 MPG. I was averagin about 9-10 mpg and wouldn't dare leave the city unless I had to. I have sold the 454 for a cool $800, so this pays me back for ALL the money I spent putting the cummins in. Pretty stoked. So all in all, I have under $180 in this truck. Next I plan on advancing the timing on the P-Pump and playing with the pressure regulator a bit. Get some cheap HP till I get the money to do an intercooler and a bigger turbo. Then I am going to extend the cab, drop it lower, paint it satin black, get my shop logo on it, and haul this thing when it is done to a few hundred shows.

and here is a few other things I have done too

So thats where she is now.

Cool build! Do you have any pictures of the floor before and after you modified it for the new trans?

Well well well. Good to know. We bought the truck and it was a 94?? So guess I learn something everyday! Thanks for that! I mean it. Ought to make finding parts a bit easier now that I know what it is.

No and I should have. All I did was cut a floor from a 4x4 that had the removable tunnel cover. Cut out about 7 inches all around it so I had extra to play with. Laid it over the top of the existing floor, marked it and cut it out. Kept trimming till it fit correctly and left a bit of flange for attchement. Since I am going to be extending the cab, I want to hold off on welding it in until I know I can.

I have wanted a 4 door dually since I was a kid. I was 89 when I rode in my first one. Left a mark I guess you could say!

Here a pic of a '97 P-pump 6BT, '94 is the same except for the Hydroboost. Could of had an older engine installed?? Are you sure the trans is a NV4500, 89-93 trucks had a Getrag 360.

The biggest flaw on the VE pump engine is the HUGE turbine housing (18 cm2 or 21 cm2). A 94-97 HX35 turbo with a 12 cm2 turbine housing is a big improvement on spool time. & makes innercooling easier. Keep the boost under 35 psi, Any higher will overspeed the turbo.

Denny T fuel pin....http://www.dennytperformance.com/products.htm

Lucas POD injectors....http://www.tstproducts.com/lucasinjectors.aspx

BE CAREFULL when doing injection pump mods, Going to far can cause a "runaway" engine.

The Getrag should serve you well. Just make sure you overfill it with oil. Remove the shifter and top it off.

Re: new guy with an 86 crew cab dually with a cummins

the fill plug is too low on the getrags. most people run an extra quart in them so the bearings survive. I also do this in my nv4500. I beat the pants off mine too. been in there a long time.
