Power Steering question
Currently my 1/2 ton 4x4 does not have power steering , should I looking into a whole new modern set up or would the system from that time be adequate?
I am about saving some money but not to the point were it won't be the best way to go. |

Re: Power Steering question
You will have the fewest problems with installation by using an original set up. Guys on the parts board sell pump brackets and correct pulleys and you can always buy a rebuilt box and pump along with new hoses at NAPA or similar auto parts houses. Note: a 4X4 box is different from a 2wd box.

Re: Power Steering question
What year is your truck? 67 and 68 don't have a dimple in the frame as used a different style of manual steering box originally. If you have a 69 and up you can use a stock box for that truck. They switched to metric o-ring fittings sometime in the 70s, so if your power steering pump is from a newer truck just get the box from the same year truck.
I previously ran an 85 box and pump on my 68 prior to converting to crossover steering and it worked great. (Not a bolt on for 68 & earlier)

Re: Power Steering question
Gm didn't change tommetric fittings u til the mid 80's. Back in the day I swapped a 76 box onto my 72 with no issues whatsoever.

Re: Power Steering question
I have a 68 c20 that I run a 72 c10 powersteering box and pump on. Works great. No mods required, direct bolt up.

Re: Power Steering question
It's the 67/68 4WD that require a conversion, 2WD has a different frame and steering box. I used captainfab's bracket (intended for 63-66) when I corrected the previous owner's shims and drilled holes. My 68 K20 kept shearing two of the mounting bolts which made for interesting maneuvers.
