I did a search and didnt find much on our trucks on this issue... can you run long tubes? should you? will they fit or rub or?!

What would a good set be on a TBI motor... theres so many out there!

Re: Shorties vs Long Tube Headers

I run a set of Edelbrock shorties. Factory exhaust bolts right up to it. Perfect fit!!

Re: Shorties vs Long Tube Headers

I run ****ty long tubes on my 89 PU. It was easier for me to make my own exhaust that way. My stock y-pipe was gone by the way i didnt even unbolt it when i took it off i just pulled. I figured full length was better flowing too. I couldn't tell you anything as far as power difference, my exhaust obviously had crazy leaks before i took the manifolds off and I'm not real heavy on the gas.

Re: Shorties vs Long Tube Headers

so long tubes will fit then?
I think I'll prob go shorties based on price alone.... my MPG project is low buck

Re: Shorties vs Long Tube Headers

The long tubes will give you better torque and horsepower than the shorties. They can be connected to an exhaust system, but it takes alittle creativeness. I purchased the Edelbrock Shorties for the 91 pickup and they fit real well and work great for me.

Re: Shorties vs Long Tube Headers

I have a '90 with stock manifolds still on. I have a chip, exhaust, filter and coil. Will I notice a worth while difference in power by going to the direct bolt up shorties? Did you?

Re: Shorties vs Long Tube Headers

I have a set of Pacesetter shorties. Fit well, don't leak, and priced decent. I am planning to put a high flow Y pipe on it that Jeg's sells. I really didn't want to go to the hassle of loong tubes and was quite sure the stock manifolds wouldn't cut it when I put the 383 in. My mileage might be better if I kept my foot off the loud pedal

The change was subtle. The shorties created a better flow and a smoother acceleration, than the stock cast iron manifolds. To say that they created a noticeable change, I had to drive for awhile to see the difference and it was there. (acceleration, idle, low end torque, etc) If you don't change anything down stream (exhaust pipes and muffler) of them, the change out to headers will be fruitless.

Re: Shorties vs Long Tube Headers

I installed long tube headers on my 91 suburban fit perfect but I also put a new dual exhaust on. Just trying to figure out the o2 sensor. Where to put it and should I use the one wire or go to 3 wire? Any help with this?

Re: Shorties vs Long Tube Headers

IMO why waste big bucks on the pacesetters, gibson, edelbrock whatever even the summit or flowtech ones. I bought the cheap ebay stainless ones and they fit DIRECTLY in place of manifolds, bolt right up, no leaks, no lower gasket, no exhaust work to be done.

IMO if you are going to do exhaust get long tubes, if not buy the stainless horties.

The rest rust fast or are way over priced and the flat flange requires mods to the exhaust to work so you want ball end shorties.

Now 96 and up is a different story, and the 88-95's don't have AIR things in the shorties I got.

I am a believer in the use of headers. I had shorties on my 91 and they did help some. A set of long tube headers would have given more torque, but it was not in the plan at that time. I now have a set of Kooks on my 2011 truck and they made it a whole new experience. As for the O2 sensor, put it right after the headers in the collector and if it were me, I would use a 3-wire one, just to make the system work better. Every now and then you will get a computer code from the single wire sensor, due to cold weather. The 3-wire has a heater built into the sensor.

Re: Shorties vs Long Tube Headers

91subbed, what brand and part number do you have? I have a '97 Tahoe that I want a set for. I'll buy black and have the second O2 sensor welded in, then go true duals and exit behind the back tire, the gas tank in the very back of a 2DR Tahoe prevents it from going straight back.

Re: Shorties vs Long Tube Headers

I'm looking to order these in the spring

http://www.jegs.com/i/Hooker-Headers...806-3/10002/-1

I'm planning a true dual with a pair of high flow 3" cats and 30" long 3" Cherrybombs. Looking to dump them just in front of the rear wheels on my 93 Blazer.
