1992 Half Ton Steering Issues

Hiya Folks,
I'm working on my sisters 92 half ton 4x4. Threw a new steering box in it today, her dude replaced the power steering pump a few months back.

The problem I'm having is when it gets up to operating temperature, the steering is uber stiff, but only in the low rpm range. I'm a reasonably strong fella, and I'm having issues turning it. When the rpms are up a bit, its fine.

Any ideas? I'm going home tomorrow and would like to get this sorted out.

Thanks in advance.

Re: 1992 Half Ton Steering Issues

I have the exact opposite,,
I have a 2500 4wd and my new steering box is so light it feels like the truck is on a lift. I have zero resistance. It actually feels unsafe to drive.

Anyone have this?

Re: 1992 Half Ton Steering Issues

Was it like that before hand? What caused you to changing the box?

My square was doing that a couple weeks ago, I got under there and found the bolts had worked their way loose. A bit of loctite and new lock washers and I'm good.

May want to check out your front end too. How long since everything was greased? Are all your ball joints and bushings still in good shape?
