Re: 1962 Fuel Cell dimensions

[QUOTE=DaddyMack;3109987]Here are some pics of my progression and the finished install. I still need to get a new cross member for the rear.. it will have to be custom to go across the rails at rear, unless someone knows of one ready made?

cutting away cross member

I purchased a 4" x 36" channel, custom cut and fit across the back to box in the rear, good protection for the tank. I will post some pics tomorrow. looks like your rear cross member under the tailgate is off a 63-66? the bolting points are inboard of the frame rails? A cross member like what I am talking about would solve your mounting issue for that.

rear cross member for the bed under tail gate? should be original 62. Was wondering if there is such a thing as a 4 inch channel. If I can get it I can cut it with my Plasma cutter to the exact size pics would be great! thanks!

If it was a '60-'62 rear sill these mounts would be on top of the frams rails. Not trying to be an a$$ just saying what I see. If you were to put a crossmember there as you are talking about, you could just bolt the rear sill to it like 62chevystep said also.

I went to my local Steel/welding yard and got the 4" Channel, it might be 3 1/2 I will check when I get out to the shop to shoot the pics for you. I notched it and welded it in place.

Yep they should bolt here (yellow Circles)

Didn't think you were...... I had no idea.. glad you caught that.. thanks!! Wonder how that happened.. but it makes sense because the holes don't quite line up I noticed. The permanent bed won't go into place for some time, so I will replace that when it comes time. Excellent!

Thank you in advance for the pictures..

The cells have foam in the base to prevent fuel aeration and sloshing.

Here are some pics of the Fuel Cell, and how it's mounted on to the frame.

Yep!
The fuel cell is a rectangular box filled with foam to prevent the fuel from sloshing around too much.
When you put gas in it you just put the gas pump nozzel right on the foam.

Re: 1962 Fuel Cell dimensions

Just a little FYI.....I've read that some guys have had issues with the foam breaking down after a while and causing problems with plugged filters and carb problems. I don't remember if it had to do with running race fuel, or just having the foam in the cell for a couple years or so.

when you have the rear bumper on can you see the tank at all if you look at it from behind or does it sit flush in there so you dont see any tank hanging?

Re: 1962 Fuel Cell dimensions

Not really on mine. I had my tank custom made for me with my own plans I drew up. My tank is deeper in the front and shallower in the rear. Still holds 20 gallons.

Yes, from what I have been told the racing fuel has been known to break down the foam using High Octane racing fuel. But, since we have the 10-30% ethanol-gasoline mixture in the gasoline now....
http://www.enertechlabs.com/ethanol_in_gasoline.htm
I need to find out when it is need to replace the foam after years in use on these since mine came with it. I may just take it out all together to be on the safe side and save me future troubles.

This one would probably hang down to low.
And at only 27 inches wide, I'd feel like I'm wasting 9" of space if it could be 36 inches wide for my 65 on a 62 frame.
