drivers side mirror/broken

any ideas was the stock mirrors the long ones that bolted on the top of the window and below it i think my was replaced with a single mount

I think the stock mirror had a single, 3-bolt-mounted mirror stem. The doors, at least on some, had a 3-bolt backing plate inside the door, some several inches below the lower window frame, with nuts welded in place for 3 phillips-head screws. The stem accepted a round head as well as a smaller version(than those 'mini-west-coast-headed' ones you described) of a rectangular head.
