Long Water Pump?
Just spent about an hour reading up on long vs short water pumps. I know more stuff, but I'm still in the weeds.
Is it correct to say that the shorter pump allows more clearance for the fan/radiator but limits your options on brackets and placement of components? If I decide to go with an electric fan, will that solve the clearance issues with a long pump? My motor is a 350. AC and power steering won't be in the initial build but I'd like to add them later. thanks |

Re: Long Water Pump?
you can use either one in your panel, i went with an electric to avoid the fan shroud.
these came stock with short pumps and all the accessory brackets put gen & ps pump above the valve covers or next to the motor the long pump was made for tight clearance hoods and engine compartments you can tuck the ac, ps and alt in front of the motor long pump on sbc, plenty of room for mechanical fan and spacer and still keep the electric

Re: Long Water Pump?
Best advice I obtained was to fit everything up to check clearances.
You should be able to get your hand between fire wall and distributor and long water pump (with fan) should be parallel & clear of stock radiator (approx. 1"). At least that's what I got with "59 and 350. |

Re: Long Water Pump?
The long water pump gives you more options on how you can mount different things like the alternator, ac compressor and power steering pump.
On the 79 350 in my 71 GMC it also means that I can see the timing marks as the timing mark is at the top center of of the vibration damper in the middle of the timing cover rather than down on the side of the engine. On that engine you have to look down behind water pump to set the timing.
