83 1/2 ton 6 cylinder, 10 bolt rear end...bearing shot?
I picked up this 1983 1/2 ton step shorty with 120,000 miles on it last week for my son.
It's leaking gear oil quite bad on the left rear drum around the axel (soaked the brakes). Will a seal do it or should I just go ahead and change the bearing and all. Maybe even do both sides? Is it a tough job? Special tools? Thanks ~wish I could post picks right off my iPhone~ Posted via Mobile Device |

You will need to pull the axle to replace the seal, I usually do both sides due to the rear cover needing to be removed. Its not that high tech of a job, but its also a good time to inspect the axles and bearings, change your rear diff fluid, and take a look at the condition of the differential internal parts.
Everyone here can walk you through it, I say GO FOR IT! Here is a Pic from the LMC catalog Desert Last edited by Desert1957; 12-22-2012 at 04:05 PM. |

You can do it, sounds like a seal to me also. Usually I'll change both seals and brakes, everything's apart and the parts are in-expensive.

If the axle is groved from the bearing then you will need a new/used axles, usually not and leaky seals are very common. To replace the axle bearings you will need a bearing removal tool on a slide hammer and a bearing installer driver. They can be a PITA to get out.

So I should leave the bearing alone unless it's messed up, I'm assuming I'll be able to tell if it's messed up when the axel is out ?....
.....9 years on these boards and I'm still impressed with the level of help, and that people are willing to take the time to share it. Nice, damn nice. Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: 83 1/2 ton 6 cylinder, 10 bolt rear end...bearing shot?
its an easy job to do, it gets messy with the gear oil. i hate the smell of gear oil. personally id take the truck somewhere and let them do it just because of the smell and its easy for them to pump in new gear oil.
its an old truck the bearings are going to show wear. your going to have it all apart it would be wise to put new bearings in. would i? nope, id pull one axle replace the seal put it back together. whats the worse thing that happens? i mean replacment axle if needed is next to free for these trucks. |
