Two more dumb questions

One of my exhaust hangers came loose this morning so I just got under the truck to fix it. While I was under there I noticed that the leaf spring mount on the drivers side side of the rear axle was angled slightly down more than the passengers side. Is this normal? It looks like the mounts are welded on still and in the correct place. Could the axle tube have shifted?

My next question relates to a strong fuel smell when I park the truck in the garage. It has a new gas tank so I don't think that is the issue. When I open the gas cap I hear a whooshing sound so I think the cap is sealing good. Is there a "common" place that starts leaking fuel on these trucks? I will go through the whole fuel system if I need to but, it would be nice to have chance at finding it quick.

Thanks.
Brandon

Re: Two more dumb questions

A bump for the rear leaf spring question.

Re: Two more dumb questions

For the first question maybe a picture would help..I think one of mine is bent up a little. Don't think it would move the axle much, but it might cause a lean..
Sounds like your gas tank is building up pressure. I had a similar problem after adding an electric fuel pump for my TPI. I drilled to small holes in my gas cap and that seemed to solve the problem..Or if you still have the vapor canistor it might be full of gas.

Re: Two more dumb questions

I had a couple of pin hole leaks in my line one time, and it would give the smell of gas. But with the pressure I think this is not the case. Is your charcoal evap system in good order?

Also did you use AN line anywhere? They notoriously weep fuel too. I did this to a VW bug to fix the fuel line, and damn it was annoying. I eventually replaced it again with fuel injection hose covered in cheap braid for scuff protection.

It's very possible that it is running rich. I need to have the carb rebuilt.

Where is the charcoal canister located? Is that what is connected to the radiator support? If so, how do I check it?

Re: Two more dumb questions

That's where I thought it was. I still have mine. How do I check it. I un-bolted the band that holds it in place but I couldn't see how to check inside it.

Re: Two more dumb questions

well like i said checking no clue... i just unhooked it while i was taking the residual bits and pieces of smog control/emissions crap, i heard once they get clogged up or get its life out of it then they just cause problems so i said bye bye to mine. also if you could get a picture or 2 of the spring mount. it would be very helpful

Re: Two more dumb questions

Axle tubes are pressed into the center section and then plug welded in a couple of spots. I suppose it is possible for it to rotate, but I would think it hiiiighly unlikely. If you could snap a pair of pictures looking from just over the pinion towards each spring perch we might be able to see what you are seeing.

Re: Two more dumb questions

It is as cold as a witches tit this morning. If it warms up some I'll go snap a picture. It might just be my eyes playing tricks on me.

I would still love to know if the vapor canister can be checked or does it need to be replaced.

Re: Two more dumb questions

It went "whoosh" when you cracked the gas cap, something in the vent system is plugged up. Older trucks just had vented tank/cap, I believe later models vented into the charcoal canister. Check the lines first. I don't think I've heard of the canister failing.

Re: Two more dumb questions

X2 on vent system. I got strong gas smell at cab because I have an 83 BB C20 which had no evaporative canister system - just short lengths of hose at the sending units at the tanks with a one way valve (same as differential vent). I added long fuel line hoses at the vent nipples at the sending units and terminated them at the rear of the truck - just above the spare tire. Now it stinks when you walk to the back of the truck - but no more smell in the cab.
