292 lake pump

well today me and my son and grand son drove up to just north of Olton Texas just south of Hart Texas, and picked up an old 292 lake pump, complete motor with propane carb. brought it home and tore most of it down, here are some pic's..

It was'nt by chance in the lake was it? Just messin with ya a little. Man you got the great beginings of a motor breaking stand with some of the stuff with that motor with a little more work and a little modding and fabbing it could be a cool run in stand.

it looks like i have a real good spare motor with a little love.on the cylinders it may work..right now i needed a good exhaust manifold and it has on...

hugger6933...it was mounted on a stand on a trailer. but all i got was the motor.it was cut off the stand. the farmer would park it by a lake and pump the water to the crops....

That's pretty cool. When I was in Iraq we would frequently pass by a large canal pump that was running all the time. One day I took a closer look and realized it was an old GMC V-12 that had probably been running more or less continuously for 40 years.

my guess is an old gmc v-12 could empty a canal pretty quick.lol

What is a lake pump used for? I have never seen such a thing in use.

That engine will either be a great base, or give you a lot of parts. I love my 292!!

Irrigation. It is used to pump water from the lake, to the farmer's field.

I'll guess.
It was either running that pump yesterday and had a small head gasket leak in that cylinder which steam cleaned it (unlikely).
Or wasn't run for 10 years and was at the top of the compression stroke for that hole, blocking it from the atmosphere, keeping it free from moisture which leads to rust (more than likely).

I can't say why one cylinder is a lot cleaner than the others but this engine was run on propane. Propane burns cleaner and most propane engines are cleaner internally because of it.

years ago out in this part of the country, we put motors on water wells. they would hook up the motors to the water well pump. most ran on natural gas that was piped to each well , depending on how much water the well had and how deep the well was depended on what motor needed. some ran 250 and 292 chevy, and ford 300 6 cyl., some ran 350 ci chevy and 454 chevy, and some had ford 428 and 460..., those motor were mounted on a stand, the lake pump motors were on a trailer, and you could take them to a lake and the motor had a pump behind it ran off the drive shaft and could pump water from the lake and through pipe up to where the farmer was watering his crop. then they replaced all well motors with electric motors. if you noticed in the pic...there is a clutch handle in the back, to engage the drive shaft for the pump. these motors would run 24 hrs a day 7 days a week. for months, most ran at 1700 rpm. there was a glass site gauge on the oil pan to show you how much oil was in the motor...the gauges on the back panel were the kind that would kill the motor if anything went wron while it was pumping ....

mrein3 : no this motor has set for years, i guess the valves were closed so water and dirt did not get to that cylinder, the rest were dirty and rusty, i have put some p b in the cylinders to see if it will free up. if not it may have to be bored, to have set out in the weather for that many years i was surprised to see how good a shape it was in..

I've read on this site that the gmc v6,s were popular for pump duty due to their longevity. Were all pumps centrifugal style mounted right on the engine? You are linited to what 20 feet of suction head with that? So all gas engines were on shallow wells I assume

vintage windmills : most of the water around here was at around 110 feet and deeper, now its a lot lower that that, they use a turbine pump and electric motors now and have under ground drip systems , or pivot systems that are about 1/2 mile long...and moves it self ... the g.p.s navigation system is very important on the under ground drip system you can"t be off more than a very small amount . i cant tell you much about the pumps because i never worked on one, i did back in the day work on most of the motors around this area...the tractor's the farmers have now drive them selves, the only thing the driver does is slow down at the end of the field and turn it around, then he lets go of the steering and the tractor knows where it need to go. the tractor can be programed to do it all without a driver, but if someone drove in front of the tractor or your prize cow was in its path , it would not know it and would run over anything in its way going to or in the field....very cool huh...

Regular 292 engines that run on gas have a 0.312 inch deep dish. LPG pistons have .150" deep dish with 9.0:1 cr. If there isn't too much taper, cut the ridge and re-ring it.
If you have to bore it, Summit has LPG pistons with a better "D" shaped dish for better quench. Pricier than regular 292 pistons.
