4x4...so help please. |

http://www2.dana.com/pdf/5305.pdf ron sorry , newer style, but may give you an idea. the locking hub has to come off first. there should also be a snap ring on the end of the axle. after you get the hub out of the way there will be a large nut on the spindle ( tube like). there will be a washer behind it with a tab bent over into a slot in the nut. you have to straighten that out before you can turn that nut off, pull the washer and the will be another nut right behind that to take off. you can buy a socket for those those nuts $15.00 or if you have a piece of the right size exh tubing you can make one in a pinch or you can try a hammer and a punch to turn it out- the socket is preferred esp for putting it back on. you should back off the brake shoe before you remove the drum. it is usually easier that way. don't drop the bearings on the ground Last edited by padresag; 12-22-2012 at 03:11 AM. |

Re: Need 4x4 help with manual hubs
will check this out...it seems crazy that you have to do all this to change a wheel cylinder...it only needs to come forward about 1/8 inch to allow the wheel cylinder to spin up out. my hubs are the warn and have no outer bolts or allen heads....thanks for your quick response

Re: Need 4x4 help with manual hubs
it is much simpler if one just rides a bicycle
there should be an internal snap ring to take out the locking hub in -locking hub out piece out ron |

Re: Need 4x4 help with manual hubs
padresag is quite correct with the external snap ring.
Looking at the 63 shop manual 1- Snap ring, then 2- O-ring seal, then 3- Hub Assembly, then 4- Wheel hub housing The hub assembly is spring loaded and that keeps tension on the snap ring. Push the hub assembly towards the the backing plate, then remove the snap ring, careful of the O-ring when removing the hub assembly. Re installation , carefull with the O-ring, making sure it's beyond the snap-ring groove before installing the snap-ring. Laptop won't accept pictures from scanner or I'd send you the page. |

Re: Need 4x4 help with manual hubs
thanks for all your help...i know what you mean about the dentists pics too. got it all a part and changed the wheel cylinder...brakes, wow!
i have another question if any of you see this or may have to start a new thread... after locking it in and using the 4wheel drive it is tough to get it back into 2wheel and to unlock the hubs...its like it gets stuck and doesn't want to release...is there a trick to these old units...Merry Christmas |

Re: Need 4x4 help with manual hubs
thanks for the pages...yes i got it back together fine...and actually it was doing it just before we took the front end a part. seems it just gets into a bind. sometimes if we put it in reverse and slowly let out on the clutch while putting pressure towards the 2 wd it slips in and then hubs unlock fine, but it is a battle last few times getting it out of 4wd.
