Re: 307 starter bolts

Does your truck have an automatic or manual transmission?

An automatic will have the starter bolted to the engine block with two bolts. A manual trans (with the OE cast iron bellhousing) will have the starter bolted to the bellhousing with three bolts.

Here is a page I put together with pics of various Chevy starters, nose pieces, and the bolts used to attach them --> http://rmcavoy.freeshell.org/starters.html

It's a manual trans. The problem now is that it hits the exhaust pipe.By looking at your info i dont need that temanal anyway?

Re: 307 starter bolts

Yeah, that "R" terminal isn't really needed if you've swapped to electronic ignition and are no longer using the points and associated resistance wire.

I'd be worried about heat soak and hot start issues with the exhaust pipe that close to the starter though. What type of exhaust manifold are you running?

For reference, here's a pic of my 72 showing the clearance between the starter and stock "rams horn" exhaust manifold. It's a 307 with a 3-speed manual trans so it has the bellhousing mounted starter.

Re: 307 starter bolts

I thought that they where stock ram horns. Now that i have the starter setted where it should be it looks like i have a bit more clearance

Re: 307 starter bolts

Does the 307 have a two hole staggered bolt pattern on the block? If it does you can use a mini starter with a staggered two bolt pattern.
