Tailgate Question

A few months back we picked up a 61 apache for my wife. the truck is in ok condition. Of course pics on Ebay look great. bought it, and the seller delivered it to me on a flatbed 300 miles from here.
Anyway, attached is a pic of her tailgate. A friend of mine thought maybe this gate was covered over with a kit online to give it a smooth look. We dont care for this look, we like the stock look. As anyone here heard of such kit. Maybe if I cut a few welds I can find the stock gate under it. Or I could find a basket case and make it worse. Any thoughts?

Re: Tailgate Question

I bet if you remove that cover you will find what you are looking for. I have seen the kits on line. From the looks of the rear I would guess the PO was trying to go for a custom look. i would say cut the welds and see. Worst case you will have to get another tailgate.

Re: Tailgate Question

A kit? I don't see needing anything other than a piece of sheet metal, a welder, a maybe a little filler to accomplish that look. Out West, decent rust-free tailgates are plentiful enough that I would not put the time into "undoing" the one you have. Finding one where you are might be a different story. Add shipping to the cost of buying one from out here and see if it's worth it for you.

Re: Tailgate Question

I agree with oem4me. I have a 72 with POS aftermarket tailgate with a smooth finish. I've bought two used tailgates in the last 30 days, one off Craigslist, the other from a local board member. One has some rust pinholes in the very bottom that will easily fixed. The other is nearly perfect, save a couple really small dents.
If you're patient, I'm sure you'll be able to find a good one in your area.

Re: Tailgate Question

You should be able to tell if it's just a cover by looking at the inside of the tailgate for the reversed CHEVROLET stamped into the steel.

exactly right!

grind the edge to expose/cut the welds on the side and that will help you find the upper and lower edge. I think the smooth look would be better marginally if it didnt have the stock latches.

I wonder what it would look like if someone kept the body line in the smoothed tailgate if that would look better?

Re: Tailgate Question

I'd start fresh with a good tail gate & scrap that ugly one.

Nothing to loose by cutting it apart though.
