Best Headers for a 48 with a 292?

Plan on putting a 292 in my 48. Using a Clifford intake. I need help on picking the best headers for this setup which includes stock steering.

Re: Best Headers for a 48 with a 292?

I plan to go with the cast iron ones from Tom Langdon http://stoveboltengineco.com/catalog...417&id=1395980

There are some tube headers around that are made for the application too but I haven't looked into them.

77 C 30 dualie, 454, 4 speed with a 10 foot flatbed and hoist. It does the heavy work and hauls the projects around.

Re: Best Headers for a 48 with a 292?

Either Clifford or Langdon's. I havn't seen any dyno sheets to compare the two. Clifford has either shorty's or long pipe styles. I don't like the configuration of either of those though so I am planning on having custom stainless headers made for my 250. This way I can run the front pipe under the oil pan to the other side of my truck. Kind of like these. Only problem is I was quoted a price of $1,500

I am eyeballing the ones at the top of the page.

jegs has some

The langondons that mr 48 posted are real nice for the traditional look.

those are the shortyies, I just don't like the way the front set points back towards the driver. On my 46 I am using an under the cab brake booster and its just real tight to fit 2 exhaust pipes in between the booster and the tranny. Plus I like the true look of dual exhaust (one pipe exiting on each side of the truck) So thats why I think I'm leaning towards custom headers. actaully the pic of the headers i posted where for sale over on the Hokey forum for $100. Unfortunately someone else spotted them before me

This is what i'm looking for. I would just run the tube under the oil pan to the other side. To bad they don't fit a 250

Re: Best Headers for a 48 with a 292?

Oh cast, ok there Is only one place that I know of to get them for the 250-292 they are simular to fentons.

http://stoveboltengineco.com/catalog...417&id=1395980

Give the link a minute to settle it is kinda slow it will go through a couple pages and stop at the picture of the headders. I hope this helps.
I looked all over for fenton style headders for my 250 let me know if this is what you are looking for.
If i would have waited a week mr48 posted a link.lol

The langdons are not what I'm looking for. I don't want the front ports ponting towards the back. As far as I know my only option is custom.

Re: Best Headers for a 48 with a 292?

I'm not running a stock steering box so that won't be an issue for me. Is the engine setting lower than a stock engine would set or?

I went out and looked at my 48 that still has the 250 in it and the block is 7 inches from the part of the steering box that the adjustment nut and screw sit on, the top of the stock tin 250 valve cover is 10 inches below the center of the top of the arc of the recess in the stock firewall and the center of the waterpump inlet is 8-1/2 inches off the front crossmember or right close to that. The truck sits on a 54 3100 frame and uses a cast iron V8 bellhousing bolted to the stock 54 crossmember with V8 mounts.

Re: Best Headers for a 48 with a 292?

I have a '49 3100 with Langdons cast iron headers. If he knows for sure that you're putting them in a truck he will modifiy them for you. I'm very happy with everything i've gotten from Tom.

Re: Best Headers for a 48 with a 292?

Agreed, I was fighting them and called Tom. He says " If you had told us they were for a truck, we modify them before we ceramic coat them and then ship them to you" So I cut them up, had the welded at the machine shop after cooking in an oven to 700 degrees and cooling down for 2 hrs slowly. They fit great , sound great , work great , look great, Tom is great.

I shouldn't have problems with the Clifford shortys in my 52 or the langdons.

I'm really appreciative of all the replys and guidance. Looks like I'm going for the modified Langdons. After I get the truck running, I'll be investigating putting a Pontiac OHC 6 I have into it.
