Can anyone help identify trans.
I've had this trans. sitting around for years so I thought I might try and sell it but wanted to see if I could get some info about it and if its even of interest to anybody.
All I know is its manual and it came out of the 67 I bought a few years back. I can't find any numbers if somebody could point me in the right direction or say its not worth it. Thanks in advance for any help. Posted via Mobile Device |

It's a Muncie M318 three speed with some remnants of a floor shift conversion left on it.

The flywheel could be a 153 tooth 10 1/2" or 168 tooth 11". I'm betting it is a 168 tooth, 11". LockDoc

I would put it all on the "list". They may be weak for a hot rodder but they certainly worked in these trucks for a lot of years.... LockDoc

Re: Can anyone help identify trans.
Definitely held its weight in trucks for a long time. Manual transmissions would run so similar in price for a rebuild I wouldn't consider it after driving a non syncro 55 chevy. Weak is a word I'd never use with this granny though. I'd consider a design weak if it couldn't do its job in its OE application.

Re: Can anyone help identify trans.
They are a bit of a weak design. I wound up repairing the one in my 63 Chevy a couple of times. Parts weren't available so I had to do the best I could with what I had to work with. If you look in the center of this picture, you see the large drum shaped part. On the right, notice the notch or groove machined into it ? That's a groove that retains an internal snap ring for the synchro. The snap ring winds up getting pulled out of the groove and the synchro then floats, rendering third gear unusable.
Here is a picture of one of my parts transmissions. You can put the snap ring back in it's groove, but usually the groove is rounded out and it won't stay in place terribly long before it happens again. There simply is no demand for repair parts for these things so you're left stuff working with used stuff. If I were building another truck, I'd put a full synchro Saginaw 3 speed in it's place. Parts for them are available everywhere since the roundy round racers use them so heavily. |
