van steering column questions - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

i was at the junk yard the other day and i seen one. i have a couple questions. 1st do u have to have the ignition on the colum if u use one? 2nd what do u have to do to it to get it to work? 3rd what years will work?

1. Ignition on column: NO you don't have to use it.
2. Shorten your collapsible shaft (The Double D Shaft) By drilling out the nylon Rivets. Move the neutral saftey switch if it's mounted high on the shaft. And you can get a wiring adapter for the U-shaped plug to the flat , if you need the part # I Have it. Other than that I can't think of anything else. It's been a while since I put one in my truck.
3. Early 70's to I think '87, I can't remember right off hand.

You're best off getting one with no ignition switch on the column. They are way easier and look original. They go from 69 or 70 up to 81 and a hand full of 82 vans.
No need to drill out the nylon rivits, they will break if you tap the shaft with a hammer.

Anyone have the specifics on the nuetral safety switch? How do you relocate it?
