I kept waiting out for good sets on ebay. I got one for each ride, I paid $55 for the 65 plates and I think I had to shell out $70 for the truck plates.

No, it's not "legal", however, I own the plate number and have for the past 30 years or so. The plate is registered to my truck and I am not attempting anything nefarious or attempting to commit fraud. I am hoping no one will catch on or care if they do catch on.

In California the plates need to issued by the state and be "serviceable".

Not a problem, I completely understand! Just wasn't sure if it was something you could actually do in cali. I'm currently trying to get a title for my 67 firebird. My dad bought it in 86/87 in NY with no title, he never registered it, now I have the car here in SC and decided not to work on it until I can get it titled. I ran a search on it, the VIN is clean, and the door post and firewall VINs match with factory rosette rivets and decoding the VIN matches what the car is... Looking at a few options, they all suck. I'm just about willing to do "whatever I need to" to get it titled.

Lightbulb Re: Look what came in the mail...

i know it hard some times and in some states its a lot of trouble to get a title for a vehicle, i have a friend that told me a few months ago that he can get a title for me, we were talking about buying a vehicle that did not have one , and he told me to just let him know and he could get one for me if i ever bought an old vehicle and needed a title. i know he crushes a bunch of vehicles and has a lot of scrap iron sales. so i guess he can get a salvage or rebuilt title. but how he gets it is all legal ...or i would not even try it...so you might be able to contact some one in that business and get one that way....may be this would help you.

Re: Look what came in the mail...

There is still the issue of poor quality on the fonts. I mean you paid good money for those plates and they ought to be dang nice for that price. I would pitch a fit and get a refund then look elsewhere for a good company to make you a new rear plate. I would then let Rene's wife paint the front one. I have seen her plates in person and I promise you they are top notch. Then take those plates you just got in the mail and make garage art out of them

Re: Look what came in the mail...

Give it a shot at restoring your originals. I did mine years ago and they came out fantastic. I'll see if I can dig up the old thread. It is not difficult to do at all.

This is true. My rear plate has some swiss cheese but I did them anyways. I just sprayed a really thick coat of black paint, next time I'll use a semi gloss, and had my mom do the letters. While they are not show quality I only have $10 invested in paint and they look pretty good with a set of frames on a driver. Plus with the rear plate up against the black license plate holder no one has ever noticed the small rust holes.
