67-72 Chevy/GMC 4x4 pick-up ???
Can anyone help me. I am just now getting in to the older truck market and I would like to know the best model for a build up. Years 67-72. I have the pic in my head but I don't know the best model truck to get there.
It will be a 4sp 4x4 with the np205 transfer case. It will have a 454 bored to a 468. It will be used for heavy towing and winter/farm work so should I get a 3/4 ton or can I get a 1/2 ton. Will put a dana 60 up front and a dana 70 or GM 14 bolt in the rear with 4.56-4.88 gears. It will be lifted 8-12 inches. Will run 35's-38's. What model is best, there are so many. Can I get a 1/2 ton and swap in 3/4 ton or 1 ton running gear or should I get a bigger model. I don't care if it's a Chevy or GMC as both look good. I'd perfer to know about 69's so I can build one up and paint it Hugger orange to pull my 69 Daytona yellow camaro. I know this is probably nerdy but I'm not sure what to search for. If anyone has any input please e-mail me at bkkjnelson@csinet.net |

As far as the year goes, you would just have to decide which body style you liked better also the interior like door panels and such also if you wanted drum or disc brakes up front. Also I would definitely go with a 3/4 or 1 ton or just the axles, being as you intend on pulling with it. I myself prefer '72's because I like the grilles, door panels, and the disc brakes up front. Also if you prefer '69's then that's what I would go with, especially if you wanted it to match your car. I don't think it's nerdy I would like to have a sweet '69 Camaro and a sweet '69 Chevy 1 ton to haul it with.

I don't believe which year or which model is really much of an issue if you plan to make all the mods you hint at.
What's more important is that your goal is not consistant. Lifting a truck that high and using such big wheels/tires is not really compatible with heavy-duty towing and farm truck use.

Welcome to the board from W. Tennessee.
I have a 1/2 ton 4X4 that I converted over to 3/4 ton. It has a small 4" lift and 33" tires. The front disc brakes on 71-72 are only 1/2 ton trtucks, but if you swap over, do like I did, and use mid 70's axels and suspension (disc brakes ). I like your idea of getting a 69 truck to match the Camaro. If you decide to go other years, my 71 GMC 4X4 in sig below may be for sale to help pay for restoration on my 72. |
