Yes a small block will bolt right up to your bellhousing. The 292 flywheel should bolt up to the 305 as well. As for the motor mounts, you will need a passenger side motor mount bracket to bolt into the rear location to match the drivers side. The 292 uses offset motor mounts. If you don't move the transmission, you do not have to do anything with the driveshaft.

Beware of the part about the flywheel bolting up. Every 292 I've ever had used 1/2 flywheel bolts instead of 7/16. If that's the case, the holes will be too large when you bolt it to the small block and it will wallow around.

Re: anyone swapd 292 - small block

You will also need a clutch bell crank pivot ball that screws into the side of the block, NAPA can get this for you. If you are using an HEI ignition, you will need to run 12v to the dist. aaaaand make sure your 305 crank has a pilot bushing installed, if not (probably not) you'll need one of those.

Thats pretty much it

Thanks for catching that. It's been a long time since I've had a 292 out.

Re: anyone swapd 292 - small block

The 400 will bolt in with the same changes mentioned above. 400 sbc's are externally balanced so you'll need an appropriate externally balanced flywheel.

Re: anyone swapd 292 - small block

A new 292 flywheel from Rock Auto which the manufacturer does note has 1/2" bolt holes
ATP part # Z295 which costs 75.79 plus 12.66 for shipping to Prescott Arizona.

A new 400 small block flywheel from Rock Auto which the manufacturer notes is for external balance engines
ATP part # Z294 which costs 72.79 plus 12.93 for shipping to Prescott Arizona

I cataloged the 292 flywheel for a 71 model C20 truck with a 292 and the 400 small block flywheel for a 74 model K20 truck with a 400.

It supports the bellcrank (Z Bar) that mounts to the frame. The 6cyl will have a bracket with a welded ball on it and the V8 uses a stud mounted ball that threads into the block. (I assume all V8 blocks have the threaded boss for it but I would check before intalling engine)

Here's what you need:
