Which choke thermostat?

Hi guys! First post! I've got a lot of great information from you guys on this site so I'm hoping you can help with this.

I got my '69 Chevy SWB about 6 weeks ago and the PO said it was a 327 (but I haven't yet found the casting numbers to be sure). It came with a Edelbrock that wasn't quite right so I replaced it with a rebuilt Quadrajet (7028282) from LMC. Question is what choke thermostat do I look for?

TruckAndCarShop.com says they have one for a '69 327 but does this photo look to you guys like that's what I have? Any help would be great!

Re: Which choke thermostat?

Welcome to the 67-72 Chevy Truck board from West Michigan!

Your manifold is from a newer Small block so the 67-72 truck chokes won't work. Here is a picture of a choke that is similar to the truck chokes. Also, note the difference between the manifold in my picture and the manifold in your picture.

Thanks for the info! Glad I asked before I ordered the one for the '69. Do you suppose a visit to a Chevy dealership would so me any good?

Re: Which choke thermostat?

You will probably need to switch to the older style manifold since you already have the older style carb

You're probably right but I really hope not. I was hoping to find a thermostat and just adjust the connecting rod accordingly to get the choke to operate.

Anybody have a guess as to what year that manifold would be from?

Re: Which choke thermostat?

I have an intake like yours that came out of a '75 350. I'm using a carb with an automatic choke I already had.

THANKS! That looks exactly like mine! I've searched quite a few times and could never find a photo that would show one like mine or if it did, it didn't say what it was from.

If you post the numbers on the scraped off area on picture above in front of passenger side valve cover, we may be able to determine what you have.

I'm at work right now but I had it written down. I couldn't find anything about these numbers but I think it says K02040B. I didn't take the alternator off to see for sure. Any help would be great, thanks!

Can't see it the greatest, but we made a bracket that goes under one of the manifold bolts for mine:

I may try that with a thermostat that I have. I was concerned that it would not heat up fast enough. I guess having the choke come off too slow is only going to use a bit more fuel. Thanks for the photo!!

Re: Which choke thermostat?

My memory is starting to warm up and that pic of the aluminum manifold just kick started it. I believe edlbrock makes a block that bolts over that spot becauase new manifolds are made to accept the newer style heat tubes and they make an adaptor to go to old style

Re: Which choke thermostat?

If you post up the manifold casting number we can tell you what it is, also the block casting number is on the top driver's side where the tranny bolts to the block and the build date is on the pass. side. Best way to see it is to hold your camera back at the firewall pointed down and snap some pics.

I'll have to check tonight or tomorrow and see if I can find those numbers. It would be nice to know for sure what I'm dealing with.

Re: Which choke thermostat?

Also you could pull a valve cover and get the head casting number, a lot of things get swapped around in 40 years.

I'll probably get those numbers, too.

Sorry to be dim here but are the heads not as interchangeable?

Interchangeable yes, but there's differences in them like intake/exhaust size and how they were designed for better fuel flow and compression.

I see. I don't think much would surprise me with this truck anymore whatever it has on it...

Re: Which choke thermostat?

Well the head casting numbers are 3927185.

What I can find says those heads are for a '69 327 and '67-'73 307 & 350.

The PO told me that his PO told him they put a 327 from a Monte Carlo in this truck. I think Monte Carlos came out in '70 and never came with a 327 so all this would lead me to believe this engine is a 307 or 350 in the range '70-'73.

Can't see the block casting numbers as the engine is too close to the firewall. Anyway I rigged up a choke thermostat from a early '70's 350 similar to what 71K20CHEVY showed in his photo and it seems to be working pretty well.

Thanks to everybody for their photos and suggestions!
