It's not that I hate it, that's strong word, just that there are much better options out there now.

Common guys, you all are way to easy to get your feathers ruffled
Naa, I like carbs too. I run a Holley on my daily driven '84 C10 and it works fine for what I use the truck for. But the most reliable cars and trucks I've owned have been TBI.

Re: never seen this at junk yard

I must be the only person who has a 40+ year old holley carb that still works ugly but works. The one in my truck hasn't been touché in three years and in the below 30*f weather still starts fine.

I'm sure grandma loves tbi on her truck. She just has to turn the key and floor it to 55 on the hwy tbi is fine...for stock trucks
Anything else will do. It's been proven even on ls engines that a carb and msd make more power despite the efi on the ls flowing more air

Now lets stop question is answered and we showed tbi sucks along with quadrabogs...

Re: never seen this at junk yard

Got TBI on my 'stock 87 stepper and I love it. When I get tired of anvil-like reliability and decent economy I'll upgrade to something a little more sexy. Maybe I got the only good one GMC made or something...

Re: never seen this at junk yard

for what its worth its 17 degrees outside and i just started my truck by pumping it twice and hitting the key, it has an 850 holley dp and no choke, then again tbi wouldnt support my engine, i suppose i just know how to tune a carb, oh and it gets better mpg than stock with that carb airgap rpm comp cam and headers

Re: never seen this at junk yard

I think nobody has a problem with TBI to be honest. I think it just stings most that the 87 is the one that brings in the most money as far as 81-87's go....and it happens to have TBI

My personal theory anyway.

Re: never seen this at junk yard

Never really thought about the value. You may have something there. My tastes have changed over the years. I remember butting heads with my ex father in law 20 years ago over Glocks vs his old wheel guns. Both of us were convinced we were experts. As i get older i value the simplicity that he was really talking about. If I could have gotten an older c10 when I was looking, I'd be running a carb right now. The classic lines of the squares, no matter what they're packing under the hood is the big thing. Lucky to have my '87.

Re: never seen this at junk yard

I'd take EFI over a carb given the choice. All three of my trucks are running Holley's, two 675 Street Avengers with electric choke, and one 600 with manual choke. They all start and run fine, they'd run better with EFI.

As far as gas mileage goes, I don't care. It doesn't matter what my fuel mileage is, I still have to buy gas to drive where I need to drive to. If it's that big a deal buy a Prius and some tree hugger bumper stickers. No offense to tree huggers intended. LOL.

Re: never seen this at junk yard

TBI is very limited on tuning, so forget big honkin' cams, etc.
They are as reliable as a carb, don't wash your cylinder walls down with gas like a carb and with a new wiring harness, will run a 4L80E tranny.
Ugly? Gotta agree.
Not as good as port injection, but a lot better than a carb on a mild daily driver type engine.

AMEN!

(Coming from a guy with a CCC Quad, who's amassing parts for a TBI conversion.)

TBI systems aren't that desirable, very difficult to make any decent power with, and the software is extremely primitive, difficult to use and not much adjustability compared to a multiport fuel injection system, HPtuner makes it very simple.

With TBI you are stuck with tunercat or some other primitive software to do any tuning, and it's limited, simple batchfire stuff. It's not easy to negotiate around or use, especially for a first time tuner.
If you really want fuel injection you are better off spending the money on an Edelbrock injection setup that comes with the software, or a FAST EFI setup also with software or something along these lines.

I'll take my HPtuner and LS fuel injection any day of the week. Either that or run a carb long before I resort to TBI.

To the original poster, you found that setup right where it belongs, just keep walking,,,,,lol.
you can update the wiring on the tbi units, just the same thing as updating your SPFI on your first gen engines. the 96 up computers were what the TBI lovers looked for. Ive heard of dual TBIs on top of a tunnel ram and they produce mounds of torque, all you gotta do is run tandem pigtails. of course ive never done it, there is alot better systems like you said. but there is still prefrence you gotta consider. will he like this for what he has to do or what he thinks is simple? id like to say keep on walking too but how does one learn by that? JS aint trying to break anyones balls

Re: never seen this at junk yard

GM should have used the TPI in these trucks '85+. Broader tq range and better efficiency than the TBI, plus they're easier to tune. The reason they didn't? TBI was cheaper. Dang bean counters anyway...
