Tailgate trim
Did the large CHEVROLET or GMC band that screwed to the tailgate on higher option level trucks come in anything other than woodgrain (like black?) and if they did, where the heck do you find one for sale? ALL I have ever been able to find is woodgrain. If all you could get was woodgrain, how did people match the black background lower side trim?

I may be wrong but I thought the taigate band was part of the CST and later the Cheyenne trim packages. Since these trim levels included wood grain mouldings as standard, the tailgate band was woodgrain too.
I'm not sure if the CST/Cheyenne could be ordered with black trim mouldings, if so then I'd assume a black taigate band would be included. If out there, it's probably rare. Conversely, I'm not sure that the tailgate band could be added as it's own option. The standard trim options included upper and lower mouldings on the tailgate and bezel surrounds around the tailights. Intersting question, I'd like to see other responses.

The two things that got me wondering were (1) The sale of black lower trim, and pictures of trucks / blazers with black lower trim. (2) I've seen a few tailgate panels that has remnants of woodgrain, but I've seen far more that had ZERO evidence that fake wood once was there, and for that matter, what was left behind was straight up, no fooling around, BLACK. The letters CHEVROLET or GMC, mounted on a black background (which happened to be cracked like old paint does), with black stripes painted above and below in the grooves on the top and bottom edges of the panel. I thought it weird that the woodgrain strip would be mounted to a smooth flat black panel, then letters attached. I figured they'd just glue the woodgrain material directly to the steel, slap the letters on and be done with it. Still looking for input.......

An attractive alternative is the tailgate trim off an '88-'98 truck...my truck has the '88-'98 CHEVROLET trim on the tailgate, and it looks great IMO. Wish i had a digicam so i could go take some pics...

I'm open to about any suggestion....I'm going to stick with the original tailgate panel (if I decide to run one at all). I'm really REALLY trying to stick with the showroom motif, and do the truck up to look like an original '69. Those panels are pretty expensive if I recall; a while ago, my brother wanted one for his '90 and they wanted like $100 for it. As you can imagine, he told them to go pound sand and left. :p

Let me start by saying I MAY BE WRONG (so don't torch me to bad), but I think the CHEVROLET band wasn't available before 1971, and only came with the woodgrain background.

Upon further investigation I found out that the trim piece was just woodgrain and available on 69-70 CST's & 71-71 Cheyenne's.
Still looks good in black! |
