how hard is it to rebuild 1b rochester car

Starting to notice my carb is acting up in the morning after releasing the manual choke it putts and once I awhile on very cold days my truck comes and or leaves on a stop putting like if it had a missing fire im also noticing a slight backfire from the float allowing more fuel in it so im wondering if I should attempt a rebuild it myself or send it to get rebuilt since ive never rebuilt a carb and being a tech ive never have fixed one besides replacing or adjusting do to todays modern complexes systems

I've done several also. Nothing to them just have dive in.

The best thing is that you can't go wrong. If after taking it apart and replacing the parts needed it's still not right, you're not out a lot of money. You also learn how they work and what's inside them.

Be sure and get a couple of cans of carb cleaner. Replace all the gaskets. If it's a monojet there's two large phillips head bolts on the bottom you need to remove to replace the middle gasket.

Might be nothing wrong with the carb. Could be cold intake.
Is the heat riser plate working?
Here's a link to pics of one.

Heat riser is not related to the tcs. Heat riser also isn't an emissions device. It's there to help heat the fuel vapour in the intake when the motor is cold. Cold fuel vapour reverts back to a liquid if not kept warm. Once the intake warms up the heat riser opens. It has a bi-metalic spring on it.

If it starts running much better after it warms up,then geezer may have solved your problem.Rebuilding it isn't hard at all.I've done a few and you just need to remember to do what the instructions show and that those leftover parts from the kit are suposed to be leftover. The kits are usually designed to cover several versions of the monojet.

Re: how hard is it to rebuild 1b rochester car

Check the hear riser but from the first post where you mentioned that it putt, putts after you open the choke, the assumption is that the truck has warmed up sufficiently to not need the choke or heat riser.

I don't believe you get the extreme temperatures in your part of Oregon as farther inland or in the higher elevations so the heat riser not working would not affect it as much there. I ran my 68 with the heat riser wired open for years here in Texas with no problems. Winter temps can get down to the low 20's at times. Just have to choke it more.

Re: how hard is it to rebuild 1b rochester car

Rebuilt my first Monojet a month or so ago using one of the kits available online. I just took my time, made sure everything was clean enough to eat off and after checking all the calibrations twice, I checked 'em again. From removal to rebuild to reinstall, I would say it's very manageable. And the real payoff was my truck runs a million times better. Good Luck!!
