Need 1972 Storage Box Latch Assy/Have Chassis 4 sale
Anyone have a spare 1972 C10 bed side storage/tool box door latch assembly? My door is in great shape but cannot seem to find a replacement latch and lock kit. Any ideas or spares to sell would be greatly appreciated.
Also have a complete rolling chassis from a 1972 GMC C20 leaf spring setup for sale. I mean complete, Dana rear end, complete front end minus power steering box, great seals, disc front in new condition, drum rear, rear stabilizer bar, all brake lines, parking brake linkage and more. Even has the pitman on it...has about 65k original miles on it. Bought it for a project and ended up going a different route. Stripped and started to paint it up, it is still aligned and in excellent shape. Let me know if you need pics on either item and I will post.

I have a latch assy but no lock. I'll see if I can get it off the door before I commit to sell it. Don't be suprised if this post gets moved to the parts board.

Re: Need 1972 Storage Box Latch Assy/Have Chassis 4 sale
Thanks for the reply and attempt on the latch. I looked for the parts area but didn't see where to post it. I'm ok to have it placed in the proper location, not trying to be disruptive by any means.
As for the chassis price, I paid 1600.00 for it but am open to offers. 65k on it is very clean and very complete. I would like to get my money out of it I'd possible. Posted via Mobile Device

The lock cylinder itself is the same as the door locks for 1953-1958 GM cars. I don't think it would be hard to make the actuator (pawl) that goes on the back. The only difference is that the key is only removable in the locked position on the 1953-1958 locks..... LockDoc

Hey Reno, any luck on the latch?
LockDoc, thanks for the offer to help, I have the lock on mine just my latch is shot. If I can get the latch and my lock doesn't work, I will definitely hit you up for some help. Much appreciated.

Do you know anything about the rear sway bar unit. Not sure if they were available for 72. but I have one that came off a late 70's 1 ton sigle wheel stake bed truck that looks identical. If you get a chance could you post a pic of the front bar link mounting to frame.
thanks, Dan |

The rear sway bar is from a 1 ton square body.

Re: Need 1972 Storage Box Latch Assy/Have Chassis 4 sale
Thanks Reno, there seems to be a piece attached to the back of the handle that is peering through the center of the mount hols that mine is missing. Is that attached to the handle? Thanks for taking the pics, it really helps.
Krazy Ray, thanks for the info on the sway bar, I was looking for sway bar bushings for this and was wondering why everything was coming up as C30 and such. Must have been a special order on the truck from the dealership with the sway bar. The chassis is a C20 but I guess has the 1 ton sway attached. Great information.

Re: Need 1972 Storage Box Latch Assy/Have Chassis 4 sale
The thing in the yellow box is the back of the handle, formed like a loop, with a very small bolt and nut through it. I included the bolt and nut in your parts. Take a good look at your handle, it should have this 'loop' that operates the latch up and down.
I do have a pristine setup that I could take apart for reference if need be. I am also willing to chop my rusty door apart and get the handle etc out if thats what it takes to help you out (the door is no good to me anyway). When you get these parts see if you have everything you need, if not let me know and we'll figure it out.

Re: Need 1972 Storage Box Latch Assy/Have Chassis 4 sale
Hey Reno,
Got the parts, thanks for the quick shipping. The parts are all good except I am still missing the connection to the handle that drives the latch and spring. My handle must be shot. I have attached a couple pics for reference since I have no idea what the complete one looked like. Thanks again for the help.

Re: Need 1972 Storage Box Latch Assy/Have Chassis 4 sale
Yep, the back of your handle is broken. Try to get it off of the door, then I'll know how to get mine off. The bar must slide back and forth somehow, mine won't move yet.
Maybe someone can chime in here and help. Posted via Mobile Device

I went ahead and cut the handle section out of my door for you. Don't even try to get your handle off until you get this! I'll ship it out in the am. If you would buy me a cutting disk and a stamp we will be even

Re: Need 1972 Storage Box Latch Assy/Have Chassis 4 sale
Check it out, looks like a big long rivit! No way to get yours out without cutting the 'rivit'. If you cut it short on each end you might be able to push it into the door and fish the pieces out through the lock hole with a magnet?
I have an idea on putting it back together but I'm still working on it.

Re: Need 1972 Storage Box Latch Assy/Have Chassis 4 sale
Handle headed your way.
Here is my idea for putting it back together...cut a piece of threaded rod long enough to go all the way through like the rod (rivit), slide the handle on and put a nut on each end of the rod. Run the nuts in towards the handle so you can insert one end of the rod in the hole in the door far enough so you can slide the rod over into the other hole. Now you have the threaded rod with the handle on it and a nut on each end, tighten the nuts outward towards the ends of the rod, this will hold the rod in place and not be visable. Hope this makes sense....I could probably draw it up for you if need be but I'm pretty sure it will work. Let me know what you think.

Re: Need 1972 Storage Box Latch Assy/Have Chassis 4 sale
Hi, sorry. Yes I got the handle thank you. I have removed it from your piece and have been trying to figure a good way to remove mine without accidentally nickin my door all up, and, if I can find small enough nuts to go on the threaded bolt your suggestion offered. It's a tight spot in the handle bay and the original diameter of the latch rivet makes it hard to locate a nut that will not obstruct the handle when installed.
Still researching but will keep you posted. Posted via Mobile Device
