Re: 68 C-10 operation road ready

To add to all the excitement of having a big block truck I discovered this in the #1 cylinder.

That kinda really took the wind out of my sails.....

So the block is standard bore with new pistons, guess it was just cleaned up and honed???
Also one of the valves was bent, bonus!

To change gears for a minute and evaluate what I have to work with, here are some pictures of the extra parts that came with the deal.

Re: 68 C-10 operation road ready

Ok so I have decided to go ahead with the project and see what happens. There is not a big budget at the time to rebuild the 396, so the plan is to find a used small block and get the truck running and get rid of the GMC wheels with the hopes of finding some steelies and hubcaps.

Here are some pictures of what I found from a trip to the junkyard>>

The engine was in a truck running when I bought it, I got to drive it around a bit and found that it had plenty of life left in it. I thought it was a 350, being new to GM stuff and I did not check the numbers only to later find that it was a 305.

Here is the 305 after a bit of cleaning.

Re: 68 C-10 operation road ready

The tires I got from the junkyard are 31x10.5x15 with about 50% tread. I did not find any steel wheels on this trip but did score a decent bumper and a jacked up tailgate.

I also found this 1968 Tennessee license plate on ebay for less than 10 bucks.

Well youcan kiss that block good bye. But the truck looks solid. The front grill and fenders are in good shape as far as i can see.
