`62 Panel...Chiquita
New member, new project! Awesome site here, lots of info. Hopefully I'll be able to add to it once the ball is rolling.
2 weeks ago I pulled a banana yellow `62 GMC panel out of a run-down garage and I guess this will be the build thread! It has a 235 Chevrolet (Canadian GMC mill) with a 3 on the tree, bare bones-no nothing. Needs rockers, hood and the motor is stuck from sitting. Inside is mint. Hopefully I'll get it running before the snow hits if not it will have to wait until spring. Plan for now is to get it running, the rust cut out and patched up and get it safe to drive. After that I'll drop it and swap in a 73-87 front suspension with disc brakes. I happen to have a smallblock looking for a new home although I'm tempted to build up the 6 it it is decent after teardown. It will stay 60's style, a cross between a mooneyes shop truck and a surfboard hauler... |

Nice find. Looks to be decent except for the hood and the rockers you mentioned. Keep us posted.

Did it once belong to Robert Transport, looks like their crest on the door. The hood is still here if your interested, I also have a chrome GMC grille.
Local website that might interest you. http://vieuxpick-up.forumactif.com/portal.htm

Re: `62 Panel...Chiquita
aero...it nver belonged to Robert however the previous owner rented it out for promotions once in a while, it was lettered with several company logos. Gotta clean off the glue leftover.
I'll pass by to see you sometime this week as soon as I get the brakeline changed on my K20...can't fit the hood in my car! |

Re: `62 Panel...Chiquita
I've seen a 64-66 GMC 960 in Ville St Laurent that has a primo hood on it. It's on the road beside the airport, Chemain St Francois. The company does snow removal but I've never seen this truck in motion, wonder if they would sell the hood or exchange it. I saw this truck in the same spot in 97 before I left for Vancouver BC.

Re: `62 Panel...Chiquita
Aero....thanks I'll have to check that one out sometime! For now I think yours will get me by cruising until I hit the body stage.
As for a little update, there are some stuck rings. I pulled the plugs last week and filled the cylinders with the best penetrating oil from work (I'm a heavy machinery tech), repeated again tonite. Trying to come up with a way to get a breaker bar on the crank pulley....it doesn't have a cross-shaped hole in the center like my buddy`s 235 from 1954. I really don't want to put a chain wrench on the damper.... I got the paperwork ironed out today and found a place to store it for the winter. Here`s a pic of the motor...before i started... |

Re: `62 Panel...Chiquita
WOW it's been almost 2 years since that last post. UPDATE...I pulled the truck out of storage this spring (April) and had no luck getting it to turn over, started opening up the motor and found rust everywhere....realised it had to come out...

Re: `62 Panel...Chiquita
I didn't even consider rebuilding the original motor...I threw around the idea of a V8 swap (I have a 350 ready to go) but have little (or no) time these days to fabricate and scrounge parts for the swap. I looked at everything from v8 parts trucks too far away and too expensive to ''ran when parked'' 235's in barns that looked worse than mine. I would search craigslist and Kijiji to no avail. until this popped up for sale not too far away......

Re: `62 Panel...Chiquita
It popped up while I was searching ''235'', sure enough, under the hood is a 1957 Chevrolet truck 235.
Way WRONG swap done on a farm when the truck's 4.3 gave up and there happened to be a 235 in the shop from an old farm truck. Angle iron from the scrap bin, a torch, a welder and odds and ends, you get the idea led to this abortion.....Check out the front motor mounts. I drove it home..... |

Re: `62 Panel...Chiquita
I'm on vacation this week and there's a big Hot Rod show coming up on Saturday...I decided to haul ass on the Panel this week and drive it there. I cleaned and painted the engine bay, pulled the good motor from the C10 and tore into it, cleaned, painted, gaskets and threw on the 3 speed and dropped it in the truck.
I went through the brakes and suspension quickly, threw some 30'' tires on 8'' rallys in the back to make it look better. I pulled the gas tank and emptied a full tank of nasty smelling varnish, I blew out the line too. That's where I am today. Have to finish the motor swap (wiring, ignition and rad) and change the leaky gas tank. I have one from a Jeep YJ that looks like it will fit and work...after that give it a road test. It's raining so I might wait until tomorrow... Here are a few pics from yesterday.... |

Good looking panel, and those engine mounts are sad.

Re: `62 Panel...Chiquita
How did the YJ tank swap go ?
That sounds like an available/affordable choice. What sending unit was used ? T
