Question Power Windows

I'm want to install power windows on the 'burb, but don't want to pay ~ $250 / set x 2 for the direct bolt-ons ....

Anyone install any other non-direct bolt-on type with success ?
If so, what brand and supplier ?

Where did you find a direct bolt on? I would like some info on this as well. I haven't really been able to locate any info.

I looked and looked and finally ended up buying a set from Brothers. $425.00 OUCH!!!! All I can say is they better work. I will let you know how it went after I install them. Good Luck To You.

BTW....These are a direct bolt in. Brothers guaranteed no modifications whatsoever.

I think what he is asking is if you can make a power window assembly out of another vehicle work in our vehicles. There is a bunch of power window assemblies out of late model vehicles at junkyards now. I was wondering the same type thing. Would the power windows out of a 73-87 truck work? It seems like it shouldn't be that hard to adapt, but I don't know the complete workings of a power window system.

universal flat glass kit ?

I've used the direct bolt-on ones before, easy install -- only concern I had was they seemed to be very slow and weak motors.

universal isnt worth the time and effort. spend the extra bones and get the a1 kit. its great.

I am buying the A-1 Kit too. here is a link to the site where they explain how to install them. Like Crazy4chevs said only 239.00, but you also have to buy the switch kit (39.99-79.99) I have heard real good things about their kit.

After paying $425.00 for the same kit really bums me out. I realize it doesn't include the switch kit or wiring but I didn't need that stuff anyway since I am using a Painless Harness and switches from Julianos. Thanks for showing everyone where the deal is.

I had a really bad experience with the universal flat window kit. Will probably change them out in the next year...get the direct bolt in.

Hey guys,

Just got back to the board, and caught this thread.

I really don't want to step on any aftermarket suppliers, but there is an OEM GM Power Window set-up that comes REALLY, REALLY close to bolting in our trucks.
A friend of mine fit this set-up into a test door, and with a few minor modifications, it really worked slick!
You can keep your stock 67-72 lower glass channel, rubber, etc.

This PW set-up is out of any "G-series" GM van made from '78-'91 give or take a year.
They still use "flat" side glass, and the window is about the same height and width as our trucks.
There is enough up-down travel in the regulators to accomodate the stock 67-72 door glass, and the geometery is right there.

One modification he had to make was switching the rollers to the bigger 67-72 pickup rollers. This involves grinding the old "bradding" off the backside, and CAREFULLY mig welding the roller stems to the new van regulators.
I believe even some of the factory holes for the regulator mounting even line up.
I don't have all the details, but some of you guys that are good at fabbing stuff should be able to smooth out the wrinkles. I do know that he used all of the OEM van PW wiring, relay, switches, and door boots.
I have a feeling this set-up might work for 'Burb rear doors, too.

If I ever get caught up, I plan on doing this conversion on my truck.

Sweeet Hardrock2!!!! That's the type of stuff I'm talking about!!! I like the idea of using other parts to work on our trucks. This generally tends to be cheaper than what aftermarket companies sell. Why I do really appreciate the items they sell and the time, effort, research and money they put into products to make them easier to install, I'm not afraid to take the time to fabricate certain things (if I can do it right) and save a little money. I love my truck, don't get me wrong, but money doesn't grow on trees, and I'm too impatient for the lottery

Thought I might add that my friend ended up using PW switches from a '68-'72 Cutlass, Skylark or Chevelle 2-door.
They are the older style and fit the era of our trucks better. I think they plugged right into the van harness.

While we're on the subject of windows, anybody ever had custom glass cut for these trucks?
Like maybe OEM type medium tint (smoked) glass for the door and vent windows. Maybe a non-slider rear in OEM dark privacy glass.
