Can the glass on an original rear view mirror be replaced?

I just bought an original ceiling mount rear view mirror off a '70. Everything is in really good shape, except for the actual reflective mirror part itself has some spotted places. Is it possible to have a new piece of mirror cut to fit the original housing without being expensive or a pain? I can of course always buy a reproduction part, but would prefer to fix this one if possible

Anybody done something like this before?

Cool Re: Can the glass on an original rear view mirror be replaced?

I did my 71 several years ago. Any good glass company should be able to do it for you.

Get out and drive the truck this summer and have some fun!
It sucks not being able to hear!

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Re: Can the glass on an original rear view mirror be replaced?

I've replaced them with good used ones but wasn't able to find any new ones. I tried a glass dealer but they told me these are a special shape, not regular flat glass.

Tip is to warm up the rubber going around. Also, they sometimes have a blob of adhesive behind them so you have to cut that bond or you can break the glass. The trick is to do all that, then reinstall and not damage the rubber going around it in the process...

Basically that glass company didn't want to mess with it.

and Mister B, if you do as well with this as you do with all your other truck projects I'm going to have to get your address so I can ship parts to you to restore!!

I had a 69 short bed that had the same problem. I removed the glass and took it to a guy who resilvered it. Spots gone problem solved.

Thanks LoLife for the idea, and thanks LocDoc for the thread. Looks really good. I guess a downfall, is that the day/night feature doesn't work? I actually use that

Now that's an interesting idea, and more up the ally of what I'm looking for. I would imagine the day/night feature still works? How would I go about finding such a place?

That's what the glass company was talking about. It doesn't have to do with the pattern of the glass, but the way the glass is made. The glass in a rear-view mirror is prismatic; it allows you to have a reflection from two (or more) different angles. The primary direction gives full reflection, and the secondary reflection is partial.

As far as I can tell, the law (federal, at least) doesn't require the prismatic feature, but it sure is nice to have.
