Questions on Building the Logistics Tail for Ol John Lee's Driveline Replacement

Starting to build the inventory and logistics tail for a complete 2013 driveline overhaul and upgrade on Ol John Lee.

A few questions for experienced folks on here: (I'll add more questions as they come up)

I plan a reman 327 to replace the very tired original 283.

- Am I correct, factory rams horns on the 283 are 2" collector size?

(Seems I have a choice here, new 2" dorman manifolds #674-501 or a slight upgrade to the Corvette style down dump rams horns with 2.5" collectors from Dorman {674-503 and 504} or Wiseco {938-MA035RAW})

- I have the SM318 3 speed, planning to replace with Muncie car M20. What is the output shaft spline count for the SM318?

(yep, I'll verify by yanking the driveshaft but not this week! Pretty sure its the same as the reman M20 I'm looking at but figured I'd ask and delay more grease in my hair for a couple days.)

Try SpeedwayMotors.com 930-000 for cast 930-001 unpolished stainless or 930-0302 for polished stainless.

The true rams are pretty but a pair in as cast will cost more than new manifolds + head pipe and muffler. I'll prolly go with the Dormans. Thanks for the info though.

I been wonderin about the 2.5s. Seems they were original for the hipo 327s. Wonderin it theres any advantage to em in a 220 horse stocker with single exhaust. Course, puttin em on leaves a good start for full lenght 2.5" duals and a good 4 bbl/cam up top later too.

How bout this question.

Does the driveshaft yoke for the SM318 have the appropriate dia and spline count to insert into the back end of the TH350 trans (after shortning the drive shaft of course)...or would I be makin a junk yard trip for a yoke on this swap?

The larger "rams horn" manifolds were used on the 300 HP 327 engines in '62 and '63 passenger cars and all Corvette 327 engines EXCEPT the base 250 HP.
I'm not sure if they were used on '64 vehicles.

64 C10 I have has the 2" collector rams horns. I'll prolly replace them with the dorman 2" ones. The 2.5 means a whole new exhaust or at least butcherin up a good head pipe to fit.

Both should be 27 spline, you mentioned an m-20 before, those depending on year can be 27 or 32. Take a good look at your existing yoke. After all these years it may have a healthy ridge wore in it where it's been sitting in the old tranny and will leak like a sieve when it gets put in something with a fresh seal.

I will look at the yoke. It would be cool if it was all 27 spline output and the right diamater then I'd only have to decide on the trans...manual or auto.

I think there are redi sleeves to fix up yokes like I used on the balancer. Welding and turning would be a neater fix though.

Re: Questions on Building the Logistics Tail for Ol John Lee's Driveline Replacement

So, as I approach final decision: Rebuild 283 or install reman 327 I note wallhellmart sells Accel motor oil, SF grade, 2.57/quart and rated SF for 1988 and older engines. Anyone use it for start up on a rebuilt flat tappet engine or a crate motor? Is the ZDDP high enough to prevent the cam from gauling at startup and during daily driving?
