Re: MIG Weld Wire for Sheet Metal Repairs
There is a mig wire called "silicon bronze". I'm told by a friend that it works well at low temperature and hammers/grinds really well. Down side is that you must use 100% argon with it. Both my bottle are full of Co2/Argon 75/25 so I must wait til one is empty to try it.

Hu..hum. I think someone owes someone a beer. Go ahead and reread the posts and I'll watch to see if you give the beer to the right person.

Re: MIG Weld Wire for Sheet Metal Repairs
Airgas 75% argon, 25% CO2 for me. This is the garden-variety gas for mig welding. If you do stainless you might want to consider a tri-mix of helium, argon & CO2. See your supplier about amounts of each. Aluminum works well with straight argon.

Re: MIG Weld Wire for Sheet Metal Repairs
a while back, i hadn't use my cheap old hf helmet for about 9 mths and it was just staying dark
i set it outside in direct sun for a couple of hours and the battery charged up that revived it for a couple more years until the head strap broke so yes; i'd say the flash sensor is also the solar cell for keeping the battery charged

Re: MIG Weld Wire for Sheet Metal Repairs
I just picked up a Pro Mig 135 and need gas. Going to do some practicing on my Blazer before anything on the SWB. Good stuff here! Going to get some smaller wire now.
I have a auto helmet from Lowe's and it's the best thing that ever happened to my welds. Solar powered and I always test it prior to welding with a quick flash from a Bic lighter. Skylight in the shed keeps it charged and ready!

Re: MIG Weld Wire for Sheet Metal Repairs
What I noticed the last time I used my Harbor Freight metallic blue auto helmet is that it didn't turn on! Like an idiot, I flashd myself TWICE (DOH!) before I realized I had to turn it on manually inside the hood where the darkness adjustment is. It actually clicks from Off to On. Once I turned it on - and I hadn't used it in months - it worked perfectly.
