ambidextrous mirrors

can someone pls confirm yay or nay that the pictured DF2 camper mirrors are the same between left and right - i.e. can be mounted on either side... I have always assumed they are interchangeable left/right, but I've only ever owned one at a time... so wanted to confirm. Thx.

Re: ambidextrous mirrors

Good question, I would have bet you a fuel selector bezel on that one and lost. They are different between left and right! As best I can determine the "brace assy." (triangle component) is handed. From pictures of a '71 (factory DF2) the difference appears to be that the forward tube is on top where everything bolts together at the swivel arm.
BTW: Jocko have you downloaded your parts manual yet? Learning it might be a good project when you are not in the shop. You can even use it to help your buddies with earlier models too. :-)

I would give my right arm in order to be ambidextrous.

Edit: Just gave my original mirrors a closer inspection. If there's any difference at all, I cannot see it or measure it. Drivers side has the forward triangulated tube on top; passenger side has the rearward tube on top. They appear to be identical. And of course the tube position is easily changed by unbolting and moving to the desired location.

Re: ambidextrous mirrors

Mark, I have those same mirrors on my '71 4x4 and I like'm. Big enough to see something in them but don't have the blind spot like from west coast styles. I added them to my truck when did the paint and body, can't say as I really noticed a difference in the mounting of them.

Re: ambidextrous mirrors

Hmm, interesting. I guess the listing of separate part numbers doesn't guarantee they are different, but it sure would seem so. (Yep, I've downloaded my parts manual Tim - just thought for sure someone would know off the top of their head).

I appreciate you all looking at your own trucks, very helpful. Makes me want to go look at one in person and walk in circles around the truck...

Like I said, only have 1 right now. My "plan" which changes often is to mount the smaller tripod mirrors (same size head) but without the fold-out capability for when towing. I like the overall look of them better, and have spent a good amount of time tracking down the parts. But there's something to be said for keeping the truck original, I'm trying to do that everywhere else, but I initially hated the mondo-monster camper mirrors, but I have to admit they are growing on me... Thanks again gents, appreciate the help.

Really does not seem right that the tube ends are the only difference and enough to warrant a seperate part number. Is there any difference on the brace assy. tube angles going into the door?
The fact that it is reversible regardless of design intent could have resulted in a lot of trucks being missbuilt or the incorrect part being used in service.

Still a good question and as it appears they are reversible and correctable, can't do that often with handed parts. Be intersting to see if anyone has a service kit or instruction sheet though.

Tim, I looked at those downtubes also. They are the same length and bent at the same angle. If there's any difference, I couldn't find it.

Re: ambidextrous mirrors

Yes the four (between the two doors) down tubes are all the same part number. The difference might be the angles of the brace assy. itself moving the mirror head/arm slightly forward or back from centerline.
