Want to paint my frame and underside of the bed but don't want to use a sandblaster to sand it down. What else (wire wheel, sanding discs, etc) can be used to get these areas ready fot paint?

A die grinder with a 3" 36 or 50 grit grinding pad would work well to take any old pant/rust/dirt/gunk off, and then go back over with some 80 grit paper & clean it real good with wax & grease remover beofre you spray primer down on it.

This will be a great exercise for you to see how valuable it is to fork out the money and have it done.

A few cans of oven cleaner and a power sprayer will come in handy too. And a scraper.

Here is a frame I tried a wire wheel on a drill/grinder.
*stay away from your clothes... it wraps them up quick and fast.

Ive been stocking up on wire wheels and sanding discs over the last month to do mine. What primer and paint are you going to use?

I powerwashed mine and plan to use rust bullet, then a coat of black rustoleum with hardener added.

I used a wire wheel in my 4" angle grinder on my frame to prep it for paint. I used some smaller wire wheels in my air grinder and some hand wire brushes in the tighter spots. I think it came out well.

I'm doing the front now. It's messy - if you're inside cover anything you don't want covered in dirt/dust/grime. It will catch on your cloths! I also wear goggles and a face mask when I do it to keep the junk out of my mouth, nose & eyes.

I used Masterseries Silver primer and their Chassis Black once I was happy with it. Here are some pics - Before, during, primer, & after.

Hey Derick, I found mine on Craigslist in Buckhorn for 50 bucks. It's a 60 gallon 5hp Campbell Hausfeld. I put a 25 dollar connecting rod in it and I've been using it for 2 years now.

If you do get a compressor, make sure compressor uses oil and not a oil less compressor. A oil-less compressor won't hold up.

That's probably not gonna run many air grinders/sanders, not enough volume. And i'd reccomend staying away from the screw drive compressors like that, they are mostly oil-less like spatz pointed out, and yeah, they don't hold up. Plus they are OBNOXIOUSLY loud & annoying. Get a good belt drive compressor if possible, something 5-8 hp with a 60 gallon tank, putting out at least 13-15 scfm@90psi. Your first post answers your question. Just add elbow grease. Wire wheels do what a sandblaster does.

These guys know! Oil-less are horribly loud, IMO. I had one for a while, and it did good (was a Speedaire I got out of the scrap pile at my old job), but it was just really loud, and didn't hold enough air. I got a belt drive Speedaire from the same pile, and got some new capacitors for the motor, changed the compressor pump oil, got a new check valve (was leaking at the pressure switch), and it works awesome now. Just had to tighten the belt (it streched over time, started slipping) and it cycles a lot faster now. I love it.

But all the suggestions here are good ones. Just depends on if you want to spend the money for a compressor. Lots of guys have done it without.
